Deleting postings

I have noted on the current MLS thread that two members have entirely deleted a posting as if it was never there in the first instance. How does one completely erase a posting so that other members cannot see it? I know how to edit a posting but to completely delete existence of a posting opens the forum to potential abuse.

In case members say it is not possible to completely erase a posting then a certain member posted an image of a pink pony and stated “I love pink ponies”. That posting lasted a few minutes only. The second posting was by a forum sponsor on P15 of the MLS thread whereby he quoted postings from two members and then made an inane response. That post lasted an hour or so and is now gone, zap, no trace left.

What’s MLS?

The moderators over there have a magic button that can delete pink ponies. Errr, I mean forum posts.

Andrew

Andrew,
Bob is the only moderator and has affirmed he will never delete a posting. Two postings in one thread and neither was insulting (at least not to me. All water off a duck’s back).

Tim, did you mean on this forum’s MLS thread? I thought you meant over there on MLS.
I have Quote, Edit and Delete buttons for each post I make on this site but I haven’t tried it on pink ponies yet.

Andrew

Andrew,
I have not posted on MLS forum for many a year. My reference was to this forum. I can see now what you mean with the ‘delete’ prompt. I had not known it to be possible to totally delete a posting previously (not that I ever wanted to).

I have issues then with the delete prompt as a member could make a dispariging post, sit on it for a while and then delete it, thus possibly passing Bob’s attention as he is not moderating 24/7. Perhaps there is a backup that he can view all postings made even deleted ones.

Hopefully, some clarification can come.

Tim, if people make disparaging posts to delete later they do run the risk of someone else quoting them before it is deleted. or even better no one actually seeing it at all.
If they modify a post the time and the fact that it was edited is added to the bottom of the post.

It is a bit like people poking their tongue out at you when teach is not looking then playing goody two shoes. You get that in any ‘mothered’ system. I think it best to ignore antagonists and need no minder.

Maybe the person realized they were being an ‘donkey’ and had kinder thoughts later.

Andrew

REALLY? Do we really need a thread for this? How bout we all go play trains…

Some people have nothing better to do…

!!! Delete, delete!

FYI on most other forums the delete options are time limited as can the edit options. Once past the specified time only a moderator can edit or delete a post.

One can even delete himself here, it has been done before, there may even be a badge for self deleters !

Your right Gary. If we could delete some comments from others maybe we could send them a trophy?

I have advised a few members on the HO site that I moderate, to not delete posts. Not that they have ever posted something offensive. But one member was deleting his posts once he got his answer. That kind of defeats the purpose of the forum, because, maybe someone else, later on, will have the same problem and the deleter’s post would help him. Also, it makes the answers to the post look like disjointed musings, or one sided conversations. So, I think it makes sense to “time limit” edits and deletions on a forum.

Just my 2 cents. On the open market thats actually worth about .5 cents.
