When applying water transfer type decals, is it possible to apply them to a surface such as a box car or wood sided type car?. Or would the dry transfer type be better?. Travis
Decals work quite well. I prefer them over dry transfers.
For a non-smooth surface, use Solvaset to soften the decal. You can get it from Walthers.

Travis,
When I apply decals to wood surfaces I find the best thing is to use some laquer thinner on a fine brush. Work the film edges and you wil see the film melt away. do not apply to much or the decal will distort. Follow this up with light oversprays of the same thinner. When dry overspray with dulcote.
I use Stan’s decals on all my wooden builds. After they dry, I gently slit the decal with a new Xacto blade along the scribed “joints”, then gently coat the decal with Solvaset". The decal then melts right into the scribe. Do one side at a time, leaving the side you are working on facing up, so the Solvaset doesn’t run off.
Dry transfers are the only way to go on styrene for me…They work beautiful on smooth surfaces and no need for trimming, solvents, or sprayed over-coats.
They work terribly on porous or wooden surfaces unless the wood has been sanded smooth and painted with a gloss finish. I’d stick to decals on wood.
Like most things in this world, some things are better fit for a given purpose than others.
