Decal Rivets/Weld Lines Question

I know a few people have used the Archer transfer (and other decal company’s) decal rivets to replicate rivets on models/masters for molds. My question is this has anyone tried to use the rivet decals to replicate the spot welds on a car, as in the photo below? I’m wondering how much of the decal rivets look like rivets verses a spot weld?

Maybe you could smash the Archer rivets before you applied them so they look like spot welds?

I’ve never used them so I am just throwing out ideas here.

According to this, they do have weld beads, among many other details. Note that I have not tried either the rivets or the weld beads.

Bruce & Dave,

The weld beads look a little different than the spot weld in my pic. But either option might be worth playing around with. I’ll have to experiment when the time comes.

Here’s more than a couple of ways the plastic modelers do it.

The link is great, but it talks more about weld beads. I’m trying to figure out how to replicate the spot weld marks. Interesting approach with styrene. The decals look much easier!

Craig,

I tested the Archer rivets when they were announced (at their request) and found them a bit flat - 0.005" high, I recall.Check out the revews at

I suspect you can sand down the rivets once they are dry.

Have you thought about styrene rod inserted in a hole? You could soften it with MEK, and smash it with something with a flat end.

Burl,

I hadn’t thought of something like that… Hum that could be a good solution. Might be labor intensive, but it could work.

Pete,

I’ll keep that in mind. I have a feeling that this will be a lot of trial and error to see what works.

I’m surprised no one has commented about the decal on the prototype…

Craig,
I’m shocked, SHOCKED, you should mention it. This forum is full of polite, well-mannered folk, so of course we didn’t even notice that decal.

(Where can I get one in 1:20.3 ? Stan, you there ??)
