Dave T's 2018 Build Challenge

Got some time to tackle the roof. I wanted to make this roof different from all the others. I made some card stock Fit ups.

There will be a cupola on the top. Layered out the patterns on 3mi sintra.

I beveled the adjoining edges with a finger plane to better fit.

Taped up the joints.

And folded it up for glueing.

And glued it up.

Note that I put reinforcers in the joints, but only on the inside and not on the overhang. I have found that placing the pyramid upside down inside the building, puts good pressure and alignment to the roof panels.

Back to the hospital for the night. My body is starting to adjust to the awake all night, sleep the mornings. Est. 7-10 more days.

That’ll be a nice looking roof, Dave. You did a good job fitting the joints. If I didn’t know better, I would say you’ve done that a time or two (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Coming along nicely Dave! Is that finger plane from Harbor Freight? I was in there the other day and saw them. How well does it work?

Steve

@Steve I don’t know it’s source, it was a gift, It might be, I did have to do a lot of work to it to get it working well. I had to re-grind the very croked blade, heat temper it and sharpen it. the throat needed some cleaning up also. It works rather well now. I have a number of miniature tools, that all work well after a good tune up.

I was going to say that is a sweet little plane…too nice for harbor freight but with all the work you had to do, it sounds about right!

I got curious as to the finger plane. I did go to Harbor Freight and I found them.

After the tune up, they really are worth the $12.99 to me. Better quality then the run of the mill HF stuff. These are made in India not China. The Finnish is really good…

I got some time to work on the roof today. Got the facias on and trimmed out, and built a cupola for the top.

To waterproof the cupola, I gave it two coats of TiteBond III as a sealer. Primer and paint to Finnish before mounting.

Time to put in a special production order to Taylor Tin works for some roof panels. And start to figure out the bay doors.

Back @ the Hospital for the night.

Nice job on that roof. I had to replace one on one of my switch yard towers and it was a pain in the butt. Yours came out better than mine did.

The cupola makes the building and all those little vent pieces!

It is fun to see components from 3 different build challenges come together in this structure.

Nothing done today on the build it self. But the Taylor Tin Factory was up and running overtime for special orders.

Before roofing I Need to come up with some way of fastening it down to the walls. Preferably some way that can be removed for servicing what I hope to be someday lights.

Back at the hospital overnight.

All very nice Dave . . . . . . (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

This is coming out fantastic Dave. The shape, without all the windows, is almost perfect for an EBT enclosed tank.

Taylor Tin looks great!

No actual work on the Power House today. Did print 24 22x28 sale Posters for one of my best customers. ( some days you just have to pay the bills)

Taylor Tin Did ship a bunch of roofing today thou. Looks like work for tomorrow.

Back at the Hospital all night…

Got Some time to work on the Power House.

Started on the Bay Doors. Started by using a piece of 1/2" ply that would set inside the door frame after framing out the edges. Lined out the opening size and TiteBondIII down the diagonal strips.

Added the door framing, and 3-4 coats of poly with UV inhibitors.

And sprayed the frame with the poly.

Got the door installed with Glue and pins.

And got the cupola painted ( 5 coats) and roofed. Glued and pined to the roof.

Up next: Roofing and door & window install.

Back for overnight at the Hospital.

Dave that door technique is a great idea. I will be stealing it

Dave we would love to see an updated picture on how the Taylor Tin Building has weathered in 2 years!

@Pete L. & et al It is out of reach at the moment, but I’ll do a follow up in the spring…

Sure looking good!
