Dangerous erosion of the First Amendment

Now they are saying that this looser (at VT) was telegraphing his intentions in his writings. They are saying that anyone who has “spooky” writings should be hauled in, thrown in a dungeon, and the key thrown away before he acts on those thoughts.

I nominate Stephen King as the first candidate.

Sigh.

See what a slippery slope these radical loonies want us to traverse?

This is why we have the first ten amendments, to protect us from the gummint. And radicals on both ends of the political spectrum.

Yep, hindsight is 20-20, ain't it. It's amazing how many experts crawl out of the woodwork after these events. As for locking such writers up and throwing away the key, didn't a certain Josef Djugashvili try that?

Uncle Joe sent people to Siberia to build a “glorious future” there…in the permafrost. Yeah, right.

I think you’d have to couple creepy writing along with creepy behavior, this guy had a history of bizarre behavior that some did see as a series of red flags, even sending him -involuntarily- into a mental hospital for his own protection.

Someone like Steven King writes creepy stories, Marylin Manson writes creepy songs, but if you put either onto a psyciatrist couch and anylised them, they’d likely pass, well maybe not Manson but you get the idea. This guy scared people well before this event.

This kid had a history of mental problem that SHOULD have come up on a background check for firearms purchases, but Virginia has some of the laxist restrictions in the US, they only check for felony convictions if my memeory serves correct. Anyone see the video of undercover NYPD cops buying guns in Virginia in less than an hour with only a minimal check of who they were supposed to be? Well thats something the State of Virginia will have to deal with after this mess. Give it time, then the screaming of outraged parents will begin…

Right or wrong, alot of heads are going to roll.

This guy had a lot of red flags. It was obvious that there were problems on the horizon. What I don’t understand is since this guy was a foreign national when he went before the judge for his mental problems he should have been turned over to the INS and shipped back home. End of problem.

As Steve pointed out, when these events occur all kinds of “experts” crawl out of the woodwork proclaiming “We need stricter laws”. No, what we need is to make the ones we already have work. We pass laws to solve problems…and then under fund them and under staff them and fail to use the already existent tools available to make them work.

Warren,

Maybe not “end of problem”, but out of sight, out of mind.

There was an item on CBC not long ago, about the buying and selling culture of guns in Virginia. Sure was an eyeopener!

I’m of the belief that if everyone packed a gun there would be a lot fewer crazies going off, and when they did, a lot less damage to the community.

In the case of this recent crazy, deportation would have been the end of the problem…for us. It would have been So. Korea’s problem.

Warren

It not like he just fell off the boat. While he was a resident alien, he had been here since he was 8 years old, he was as Americanized as anyone else on that campus.

Yeah, he was one of us.

He is now a poster child for better funding for mental health treatment. Probably schizoid, definitely bipolar. Had he been stabilized on meds, he would still be alive. So would a lot of other people.

Instead, we are going to end up with knee jerk laws that do nothing. Why? Funding mental health tx is just too expensive.

Oh, yeah? Ask the parents…

Steve, The sad thing is that they said the same thing about the two nutjobs after Columbine, you can see what became of all that, virtually nothing.

The only lasting thing we got was a documetary by Micheal Moore…

Uh huh. Sad, isn’t it?
