I and shopping for a new sound card for my 16 year old 4-6-2 Pacific that does not have a decoder for DCC and I would like to know if a CRE 29441 4-6-2 Pacific Steam Dallee Digital Sound Unit would still function on linear track power or do I need DCC setup?
Yes, that will work. I have the trackside TE and dallee board in my Mallet.
However, I like the Small Scale Railways board that I have in my Annie better. It doesn’t have triggers to control the bell and whistle, but lots more character and nicer sound to the chuff, bell and whistle. The small scale board whistles and bells (?) according to what you’re doing and on a timer. It must be pretty clever as it always seems to be making appropriate sounds to what I’m doing.
I want to try the QSI board in my Mallet.
I posted a reply over at MLS–yes it will work on DC but IMHO it’s not the card to get. I have never heard one but have read a lot of bad reviews. For one thing, the chuff sound stops when the whistle blows. There’s also no way to trigger the sounds remotely. But the price is good. If you do a youtube search for “dallee” you can hear some examples of the sound. I’ll second tom’s recommendation of small scale railways. The sounds are good and the price is under 100
I would look hard at the QSI system–it has high quality sound, will work on regular DC, on DCC, on radio remote control with batteries or on track power with remote control. It also does not require reed switches or infrared sensors to regulate the “chuff” sound, because it’s triggered by voltage. The QSI decoder, with sound built in, is under $140 bucks
QSI also has a throttle that lets you trigger the sound effects and lights with conventional DC, if you choose:

It seems like a great combination of flexibility, quality and relatively low price. I have three QSI cards now and I’m running them with airwire and track power.
I have one Dallee unit and it does have triggers, I use them with my RCS control (or supplied reed switches)-installed in LGB#50 switcher. It’s a diesel sound unit, and it’s a little less than perfect…I too like the Small Scale cards for steam (esp for the price!).

What do you mean small scale? are you using HO scale sound cards in your G scale trains?
Sorry–I guess I was wrong bout Dallee sound and triggers
Small scale railway company makes a soundcard that works well with large scale
Jason,
with Dallee, you get what you pay for. Steam outline sound is extremely basic. I recently fitted a LGB #65001 digital sound unit to a Pacific tender, along with the #65012 sound function trigger for bell/whistle. I fitted a #65011 sound storage capacitor, but could have used a 9 volt battery to supplement stationary sounds and low revolution chuff. Very pleased with result, plus the digital sound unit has a DCC decoder fitted, so going DCC will not incur additional expense.
Jason Brown said:pretty much....check the link mike posted....there are many on MLS that have used and been pleased?

I like it. Souds lots better than dallee. Yes, the chuff stops when the whistle blows, but you don’t much notice it.
