D&RGW open-air passenger cars

How did they make them? Were they made from gons? I know they weren’t something the Durango & Silverton built, because I have an old video from the 1960’s showing them in the passenger trains. That would be these ones.

I beleive that there were two open cars in the early 1950s, like 52 or 53. However we were in a coach when I rode in that year. The other year we had to settle for a ride on Goose No.5.

When I rode 8 years ago, I think the open car was just a gondola with a cut out to allow passage to the passenger car behind it (which was a modified boxcar being used as the snack concession). I don’t remember any doors or steps to allow you to get on or off the train from that car, or the concession car.

Bob posted some videos of his trip made from the open car. It might show some detail.

I believed that they were derived from stock cars.

Strasburg has their Dolly Madison car but not sure if its what your talking about and don’t know if they built it either?

John,
They were made from old D&RGW standard gauge outside frame boxcars in 1963.

Thanks, Matt.
Inneresting.
If they didn’t narrow them down, they would be wider than the regular NG passenger car.
At least I know where to start.
No one makes a 1:20.3 standard gauge braced box car, so I’ll have to improvise.
A 'nudder good bash for an idler flat.
I may have to get some more of those…
Anyone know how to get the roof off an accu box car?..

HAhahahah “Dolly Vardens” not Dolly Madisons… looks like it started as a flat to me…

John I found a negative from 52 or 53, when we rode to Silverton, and it sppears to be a special built car. I am not sure what I will need to do to get some prints off a bunch of old negative but I’m going to work on that.

I rather liked riding in No. 5, very smooth and comfortable indeed, but then I’m nuts about the RGS…
