D&RGW gons

I had a chance to weather a few Accucraft gons for my buddy Jeff Redeker. The high side gons are for limestone service and the drop-bottoms are assigned to coal…

Excellent. Are the loads dummied up, or real material all the way to the bottom the pile?

nice work…

Really Nice.

That plastic looks like wood

What they said…

Good work.
I’m still learning the art of weathering.
But not learning enough: I still need lots of practice.

Nice job on those gons ! Weathering makes it so realistic . Did you use a airbrush or chalks or a combination of the two?

Very nice!

Nice work Geoff. The weathering really sets them off.

Very nice. I wish I had your talent.

Nice work Geoff

Whattayaknow? One of my photos just posted to Fallen Flags looks very similar to yours Geoff.

Photo taken 1965 at Durango, Colorado when RR still under D&RGW ownership. Actually…yours looks better. hehe!

Jon, the loads are real material. The rock is dumped over a filler block of foam. The coal is a full load, as Jeff will use the hopper to store coal for his coal burner.

The weathering is a mixed media…. Sprayed grayish brown for the interior, added interior details, brush painted wood weathering (opaque & washes) plus some powders, brush painted interior metal. The exterior was a combo of airbrush, washes and some powders. The drop bottoms, in particular, will continue to grime up from coal dust.

Richard, thanks for posting the prototype photo

Now, if you want to see a really weathered example, just visit the Orange Empire RR Museum, which I did earlier this month. Who says you have to go to CO to see a drop-bottom gon?

Or a pipe gon and idler flat:

[Geoff - email my if you want the hi-res and/or more.]

Those pics of yours make quite a study in delapidation, Pete! Can you imagine a modeller wanting to take things that far ! But then, I suppose stranger things have happened… :expressionless:

The idler looks OK, but the others look beyond help.
A complete wood replacement is in order.

John, did you ever see any of John Allen’s work in HO.? Those were in BAD shape!

You’re right there, Doug! How I’d love to have seen it for real.

Lest we forget.

The Great Poobah.

OKAY! Who allowed Malcome Furlow to weather those last two gondolas?

Well, they are about as rough as the stuff he produces.

Have fun,
