CSX Work Stoppage for the Holidays

CSX Transportation will curtail operations for brief periods during the holidays. Operations will be curtailed from 7 a.m. EST December 24 to 7 a.m. December 26, and again from 3 p.m. EST December 31 to 3 p.m. January 1. While some trains will operate on the holidays, this schedule will allow most employees to spend more time with their families.

Very interesting–can’t imagine the whole road being shut down. Kinda sounds like a logistical nightmare. Very cool though.

Where are they going to park all the trains to allow some trains to run?

The UP is reducing trains for the same time period, as well. They will reduce the number of trains they run, and cut the yard staffs as much as they can and still meet customers needs.

From past experience working for BuNSniF this is pretty much unofficial ‘SOP’ for Christmas. Pretty much everybody that can lays off (takes a day off) and then the company has too many trains to run and too few crews to work them. I’m not sure what the CSX agreements are but on BuNSiF road crews did NOT get holiday pay for working on the holiday. So what’s the purpose of working a holiday if your not going to get paid? Trains are pretty much tied down where the can online when the crews go dead. If you’re lucky enough to catch a train on a holiday its generally a fast trip as the dispatchers have lots of clear track.

Yeah, the road crews don’t get holiday pay as I recall. If you’re working the extra board, you just have to plan on working!

Isn’t that a union issue. I don’t know the dynamic of the union and the railroad, but in the mining industry. The union usually sets the benefits.

Keep in mind, I’m ignorant and am curious about the holiday pay.

Yep it’s the union agreement. For the BNSF road crews didn’t get holiday pay, but locals and switch jobs do. If you work the road you got 1 or 2 extra personal days that you didn’t get in the yard. So if you worked the system just right (or where bumped a lot!) you could theoretically get both the 11 paid holidays and 2 personal days for a total of 13 days of paid time off. A lot of yard jobs and locals are annulled on holidays so you don’t get holiday pay + working pay. You just get holiday pay. Either way its money in your pocket.

My son-in-law is a BNSF engineer curently working out of Spokane, Washington. BNSF did something different this holiday season. They offered a $100.00 a day of extra pay for anyone staying on the extra board during the holiday season instead of laying off. So even the days he’s not called to work, he’s still making a $100.00. He doesn’t mind because over Christmas they are slowing traffic way down for a couple of days. I don’t know how that works but he’s happy.

Most all RR reduce train operations for the Holidays. As most company’s shut down also and no one to unload the cars no need to ship or move trains. Later RJD

They were runnin all day and night here on the Hudson river line NY, feel bad for them.
