CSX SD40-2 Weathering

I finally broke down and started weathering the CSXsd40-2. For whatever reason, it bothered me that it looked so…not realistic. I am not good at weathering, but figured I’d give it a shot. Also, when I started this I may have had a few adult beverages. lol.

So, here we are. The trucks, fuel tank, and bottom of the body got some weathering. The fuel tank still isn’t done yet.

Here are the pictures from the next day. I took the hand rails off, it made for easier weathering. The pictures make the sides look light, but they are darker in person. I think I will leave them as is. I still want to work on the fuel tank on this side. Once that’s done I’ll work my way around. I’m out of supplies, so it will be a while before there is another update.

I think you’re off to a great start Matt. Looking forward to more photos.

Shane

Nice touch!

Well done, Matt. Keep at it, it gets better the more you do. Now you will pay attention to how things get dirty and rusty.

Matt, you really need to build a wash rack on your railroad… They are all starting to look dirty… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Weathering looks good… Keep going… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Looks good Cuz…now grow some balls and weather the the Chessie stuff! (it’s gonna be hard and require an adult beverage keg)

Thanks Shane, Kent, and Lou!

Thanks Andy. Maybe we could build a line from my railroad to your railroad I could send them that way for a good cleaning. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)lol.

Not sure if there’s enough beer in Milwaukee cuz. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)I won’t say that it will not happen, but I’ll have to get a whole lot better. It took a few adult beverages just to do this engine. lol.

Hopefully the new supplies will be here soon. I have a feeling they won’t make it in time for the weekend though.

Looks like a good start to my eyes! The rust looks great, and the dark wash on the hood brings out the details nicely. You using an acrylic wash for that? If so, don’t be afraid to do the windows as well. (I noticed you masked them.) I “wash” my windows with dilute acrylic paint, then go in with a Q-tip to clean them after it’s had a chance to dry a bit. It gives the windows a clean but filmy-in-the-corners look.

Later,

K

Well done Matt. If you’re not good at weathering what are you bad at ? (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Thanks Kevin. The wash is actually weathering powders. I mixed some grimey gray an water together. Then “painted” the entire side of the body. It looks scary. Then I used a damp paper towel and wiped off the “paint” until I got the look I was wanting.

I appreciate the kind words Dave.

looks great!

Love it(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

That might just be your new favorite locomotive to run now. The weathering makes it look real . Nice !

Thanks John and Ron!

Mike, you may be right. I really like how this has turned out so far. I hope to get some more time this coming weekend to do the other side. Thanks!

Nicely done!
