Large Scale Central

Crown Willamette Paper Co. #3 tower skidder-build log

Thanks Shawn, got the oil tank done last night. I used a 2x2 block of wood wrapped in .010 styrene, and riveted with sewing pins

this morning was spent building the frame to support the tank and the ladder

coming along nicely Aaron

update: work has started on the tower in front of the boiler, this is what some of the cables run through and then to the main tower. Some of the cables raise and lower the tower.

more on the tower to come soon

about time we got more pictures… I was afraid you were slacking off…

You need to fire that guy…I’ve heard of city workers leaning on shovels for a few minutes, but it’s been weeks and all that clown does is stand there with his axe slung accross his shoulder!

I know, ever since they hired the new shop forman things havent been getting done. The forman is always layin around sleepin somewhere. Then theres the man with the axe and his twin brother who doesn't do much either. this thing may never get done lol :) Word around the engine house is they are planning on taking the rig out to the GGRRC right of way for a test run tomorrow, heaven help us if they get there hands on a throttle :O:D

Looking good! How are you planning to do all those gears?

Still working on them. I was going to use RC car gears but it is hard finding them that size, and they are a little pricy. So I will be using pvc rings and then using .060x.060 square styrene for the teeth, this will be a slow process but will cut down on the cost considering how many I will need. I will then use scrap styrene for the centers of them.

Arron, My Dads a clock repair man. Off time they re-place the old works with new works, Old Grandfather works are full of gears and shafts… Look up a local clock man and see if he can come up with some for you… If he can’t (won’t) find another… and if you run out of options let me know… I’ll see if we can help long distance…

Neat sites, Bob. Plastruct also sells some gears. I used some of them for the crane on my bucket coaling station.

thanks for the recomendations guys, i think i might be going this route instead

more work on the tower done, still not finished but getting there. Mark, funny you should mention guys standing around with shovels

still no sign of the forman, probably layin around somewhere

The crew took the rig out to the GGRRC right of way yesterday for a test run. Here is a crew shot, the forman is layin around as usual, axe man, shovel holder, and the guy who seems to drink a lot of “coffee” these days

Then they managed to get there hands on the SC&SJ boxcab, the crew piled in and the running began

It is unclear what happened after this picture was taken but I have a feeling they are still picking up the pieces

Cool!
…:)…

I was at the work session where Aaron was displayng his work. Looks a lot better in person. This thing is huge and I think the pictures are pretty good, but the model in person is something to see. The completed project is going to need his 3/4 ton truck to haul it.

work on this project has been slow but I finally got back to work on things. I decided the air compressors I had werent big enough, so I decided to build a larger one for this project. I used some wood spools I had in my parts bin, a rivet pin, and some styrene rivets to build this one. here is the finished result next to a trackside compressor

and here it is in place. The shop forman is making sure the tower don’t fall over again

Holy moly! I just got around to checking out this thread – VERY impressive build! Really like what you’ve done so far.

What are you using to glue the styrene parts to the steel angles?

Thanks Ray! For the styrene angles and rivets I used Zap CA glue. for some of the parts that will be handled more I am using epoxy.

Update: work in the LLCo. shops has been a little slow, would be faster if I could keep the foreman awake lol. Have been working on top of the support tower a little bit. here you can see some of the bracing that has been done and the rivet work that has started

and here is a rear view of the tower and some more of the braces that are in place
