crossing diamond as 4 way stop?

So, how often do you see a crossing diamond set up as a 4 way stop?

(personally I think they should have made it a roundabout, but that’s just me)

An uncommon meet between 2 short lines at a 4 way stop. Crews exchange info during a meet at the diamond at Whitney, NC between the Winston Salem Southbound and the Atlantic Railway. Traffic at the diamond is controlled by stop signs so crews must stop and proceed after ensuring there is no opposing traffic. The Winston Salem Southbound is a joint operation between NS and CSX running between Winston Salem and Wadesboro, NC utilizing the equipment of parent railroads. The Atlantic Railway is the new operator of the 11 mile stretch of railroad that runs between Halls Ferry Jct. and the former ALCOA Plant in Badin, NC. It was originally the Yadkin Railroad before becoming a part of Southern, and eventually NS. In 2020 Atlantic Railways became the line’s official operator.

I have a “crossing diamond” on the T&LB and it is set so that when a train approaches the crossing, the second train will automatically stop and wait for the first train to clear the crossing. On occasion they both approach at the same time and they will both stop. Then there can be a “Mexican Standoff” but one will start up first and re-stop the other before collision (most typically (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)). The design and execution are of my own creation, and AristoCraft almost adopted it for a system of stop lamps (and paid me).

I call it the Tortoise Bump Accident Sentinal System or (Bump A.S.S. for short) and it works with any track-powered engine, lighted car, or even a car with metal wheels. It amazing to watch people’s expressions when they think a colision is imminent but then one train stops itself just before it happens.

There was a crossing diamond just west of Nashville, Illinois… The Evansville Western RR leased the tracks from CSX…

At the crossing, the north/south tracks had been pulled up, however the actual crossing was left in place for a period

of time… On the mainline that still worked, there were stop signs on both sides of the mainline crossing… Talking with

the train crew, I was told that as long as the actual crossing was still in place, they were required to stop before

Just make sure you DON’T use your turn signal?

Here in Detroit the NYC-PC-Conrail Jct Yard Secondary line which connects the Detroit-Chicago main with the Detroit-Toledo line for many years had a “swing gate” to protect the crossing, that was replaced by the red stop signs.
