CPR's Empress aka 2816 in Banff, AB

This year is the 125th anniversary of the Last Spike on the CPR. Quite a few special celebrations, this past weekend (Friday/Saturday) the Empress was in Banff.

And so was I, shooting a bit of video (and the breeze with several people :D).

Video is just under four minutes Canadian Pacific Railway – 125th Last Spike Anniversary (Part1)

Goes without saying, there are plenty of other new videos, mostly Diesels. But there is more Alberta Steam coming up.

Nice Video HJ. Thank you

Nice video HJ: makes a welcome change to see a Canadian locomotive in action.

Too good for words [sniff].

Thanks, H-J.

H_J Thank you. I do have one question, were the diesmals be hauled in for repair?

Paul

Great whistle on that engine  But what are those funny looking things coupled behind the second tender ?

I believe that thing(on the front) being pushed by those f units broke towards the end of the video as it started dumping water as it stopped?

Thanks for sharing, HJ.

Nicely done HJ!!! That’s sure a beautiful engine.

For Rooster: You seem to be somewhat confused as to what those two exceedingly ugly pieces of rolling stock were that were trailing the “real” locomotive that headed up the train. They are used in fertilizer service and are assigned to clean up chicken…stuff! :b

It is customary to have a diesel helper of some kind when either #2860 or #2813 are out on an excursion. It’s usually a more modern type to provide dynamic braking on certain of the routes through the Rockies, but on this occasion it is the vintage CPR veteran #1401 plus a B unit that gets to have the ride out.

A few months back I replicated this lash-up with my G1 steamer #2860 and a USA Trains CPR F7A+B and it looked VERY good indeed. Sadly it was on the flash card that died, leaving me without around 40 pixs taken on the day…

PS - here’s a reminder of what a RH looks like…

Thank you Gentlemen, my pleasure.

CPR 2816 will be at the Revelstoke Railway Days; weather permitting yours truly will attempt to get video along the line between Glacier (exit of the Connaught tunnel) and Revelstoke. Inclement weather will mean “Arrival in Revelstoke” only.
By now I have at least the video spots scouted out.

H-J - is one of the video spots the view of the railroad bridge? That’s a GREAT view, IMO.

Just askin’, is all.

If you mean Stoney Creek bridge that’s on the East side of the tunnel. In order to get good shots of that I’ll need to hike in there. Can be tricky since it’s bear country and the smart beasts hang out along the line. All the trees are getting taller every year and Parks Canada refuses to trim them for the railfans.

I got one shot of the Rocky Mountaineer crawling across the bridge, giving people time to ooooh and aaaah, The Rocky Mountaineer between Calgary AB and Revelstoke BC. Starts at 08:00, lots of highway noise in the background, there’s something to be said for a 48x zoom, if only the mics would zoom in the same manner.  Next outing I’ll test with a separate stereo mic with a windjammer, will see how that works. :open_mouth:
