Cool bridge site

Don’t know if this has been posted. I’ve been looking for a different type bridge for my railroad and found this site. http://bridgehunter.com/ lots of ideas there.

That is a very good site. I found this prototype picture of a Little River Rail Road bridge that is still standing in the Smoky Mountains.

I used the pictures to build this model:

The site was a great asset to me in this build.

I’ve used it for reference too. It’s a great site. Also fun to see what is near you that might be interesting. Many road bridges look plain from the top, but if you can get a side view of the structure they can be quite unique. I drive over a Steel Arch bridge twice every day that I never knew was an arch. Unfortunately the side views are only available from fenced private property.

This is, indeed, a fascinating web site to visit. I have seen it before and it may have been the pointer to the covered bridge web site that I used when deciding which covered bridge to copy for my railroad.

I used the Google Earth facility to view my chosen bridge: I was able to see three sides and guessed the fourth would be a mirror image of one of the others. A friend in Wisconsin, when sent a pic of my model, recognized the bridge as being the one “down the road from him”. But I was fortunate in so as my bridge was by a road. Many, such as that modeled by Doc Tom, are off the beaten track as far a 'on site ’ pics are concerned.(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/great_western/ONFRR2009.jpg)

Hey Doc,

Have you put together a set of prototype pictures next to your models of the same? If not, you should. Nice work.

Hi Ric,

In my posts in the past I have tried to post the prototype pictures along with the models. Fortunately there were some pretty good pics of the Little River RR and it was fairly well researched. This is one of the joys of prototype modeling…it just looks right.

Tom

Nice work, both of you.

I’m torn between a covered bridge and a through howe truss. I grew up with 14 covered bridges in our county with 7 spanning Shermans Creek by my house. At the bottom of the hill the remnants of Newport and Shermans Valley cement bridge piers made for good fishing holes. I haven’t found any pics of the trestles from there but am thinking of modeling the Newport and Shermans Valley.
