Just wanted to tell you about how I am containing my G scale rolling stock. I found at the local Walmart a container called an Under Bed Box. It is all plastic. I bought some of them and found that they are a great way to store my cars. The have little wheels and wells for the wheels in the top so they stack well. They are a smidge not deep enough to put 1/29th scale box car in them standing on there wheels and I usually put these on their sides. You can clip 4 small plastic “fins” under the lid to make cars fit better. I just love them. Can keep large amounts of rolling stock stacked outside in the weather, free from the negative effects of rain and snow, and still have them immediately available. Can carry a box of 6 cars directly to my track at one time, saving me trips back and forth. Check them out. Cost about $13 each.
I found some similar boxes from Rubbermaid andSterilite, the rubbermaid one would take 40 & 50 foot freight, 3 abreast standing up, I found longer ones by Sterilite that would handle my USAT and Aristo HW passenger cars.
But, they are clear plastic, and the UV rays of the sun eventually rotted them, even though they only got direct sun in the mornings. The UV also penetrated and faded the paint a bit.
I would suggest giving them a coat of opaque paint (plastic compatible) to protect your investment.
Regards, Greg
Thanks for the tip about the sunlight wear on those boxes. I had some concerns about that possibiliy. Some of my boxes are stored in the garage, others in an abandoned Ford Van. But I do put a lot on the side of my house. These are always in the shade as I live in the mountain forrest of Colorado. But I plan to either paint them or tarp them per your suggestion. Any experience with cold weather on these? I am at 9000 feet above sea level, and it is frequently below freezing here.
By the way my boxes are long enough for the longest 1/29th scale passenger cars to fit in. I can actually get 4 aristo long smooth-side passenger cars in one box. It is a tight fit and I have to trim the “fins” under the lid to do it.
I’ve been using the ““underbed”” plastic storage boxes for years… Found some long enough to hold my Autoracks and TOFC’s (38 inches long)… Found some shorter lengthed ones, to hold USA’s deep well container cars… Have to be careful with the shorter ones that I got, because the tops don’t want to stay locked all the time…
