Cooking fun foods

My sister sent me this interesting photo and reminded me SPAM Appreciation Day was coming up.

World Spam Appreciation Day, typically celebrated on July 5th. This day is dedicated to celebrating Spam’s role in global cuisine and its historical significance, especially during World War II when it was a staple for soldiers and civilians alike.

@Eric_Mueller, Herself is not excited, so it’s going to be up to me to find and prepare a can. What’s the best way to appreciate SPAM?

Fry up the Spam with some eggs.

Bill ( @Hines ),

The best way is a SPAM musubi. This is a block of sushi rice with a slice of fried spam on top. The lot is wrapped in nori seaweed. The SPAM slice should obviously be the size of the area of the top of the can, and it should fit just over the rice bloc (CINCHOUSE and O.D. bought a form for this critical step!). Some folks place just a ribbon of nori around it; CINCHOUSE usually wraps it end to end like tortilla. Some folks will prepare the SPAM teriyaki style, and I have even seen it tempura style!

SPAM musubi is a local go-to snack for soccer games, community clean-ups, family gatherings, etc. and largely replaces hot dots at gas stations as a roadside pick-me-up. On the continent, I’ve seen restaurants with “deconstructed” musubis, which are largely excuses to make a $20 dish out of a $2 snack.

Enjoy!

Eric, photos??

Wow, tempura spam… I’m not sure if I’ll be able to go to sleep tonight…

I’ll ask! Maybe I can convince her or O.D. to make a batch this week!

@Hines and @Cliff_Jennings

CINCHOUSE has said that there “is no recipe,” you just do the following:

  1. Cut one can of SPAM into 8 slices.
  2. Fry the spam until crispy on each side. Do not add oil, as it is fatty!
  3. Add a tablespoon of soy sauce and a tablespoon of mirin, which should be available at the Asian aisle in any grocery store. You may substitute with sugar.
  4. Cook Japanese white rice. DON’T add anything to it!
  5. Form the rice into blocks to fit under the SPAM slices. She recommends a mold.
  6. Wrap in Nori (She has walked away. You are on your own!).

I would note if you put an egg (like the type you’d find in a breakfast sandwich) on top of the SPAM before wrapping, it makes a great breakfast treat!

I’m playing hookie from work. Wife said she is gone for the day and won’t be home for dinner. So what is a bachelor to do?

Make Chinese inspired chicken soup dumplings, chicken and noodle stir fry, and a california roll.

Thanks yo Eric I want to make spam sushi. Lol.

Devon, I would note that if you were to ask for “spam sushi” the folks around here would laugh at you! They take musubi pretty seriously!

Eric

Spam chopped into cubes, with rice and whatever veggies you throw into the pan and cook, is a go to for me

Challenge excepted. I just ran out of nori. I have a bit of sushi rice in the fridge. So a trip to winco will get me the nori and spam. If I am lucky they will have vegimite and I have so emu still. I can do Australia/Hawaiian fusion. A natural obvious pairing

Living up to your reputation Devon, I assume you be providing suggestions to which beverage pairs best with this meal?

In the meantime, I will be making a Musubi Shaper (but not the slicer) and be on the lookout for Teriyaki Spam! I have until 5 July?

CINCHOUSE has declared this “interesting.” Wish I could sample the world’s first emu musubi!

Eric

Perfect! Note how the nori goes all the way to the end of the musubi maker. Other families have less nori. Also, if you cannot get enough SPAM, may I suggest a slice on both the top and the bottom of the musubi?

Eric I prefer my sammich to have spam as the protein, a thin slice as the veggie and 2 good slices at the bread!and pair it with a good pale ale or wheat beer , may I suggest Daisy Cutter , 805 or A Little Sumpin Sumpin

Just in case y’all think I made up the names

I am glad you clarified Eric about the “correct” way to wrap the nori. Pictures online show some only wrapping the middle 1/3. while others wrap nearly the entire thing. I am heading to the store to pick up some nori and spam and hopefully some vegamite.

Now to be clear, when I said Hawaiian/Australian Fusion I was not meaning I was going to put the emu and vegamite on the musubi. I was just going to have a main course of emu and a side of musubi.

CINCHHOUSE,

I hope I did it justice. And I was asked what beverage would serve well with an Australian/Hawaiian fusion meal . . .well it should be obvious.

Devon, I’m interested in what you thought of Fosters? I’ve never seen it here.

I do remember when my father was asked about Fosters, his reply was “put it back in the horse, mate.”

I must agree with the article; we are pretty territorial about our beer.
