Large Scale Central

Construction on The Sunny View Line

This is the Red Mountain School from Colorado Model Structures. The building’s not finished but I wanted to get the landscaping done. I think the school yard needs a swing.

Here’s an overhead view of the general area. I need to trim those bushes  We now have a road to the Yard Office. At some point a house should replace the dirt pile.

Rather than clutter this area with more buildings, I believe I’ll leave it and use it as a park, as suggested by Hollywood. Ralph

Why other RR’s are moving forward by leaps & bounds, the SVL is taking baby steps  Most of the warm weather months were spent pulling weeds, rather than building the RR :frowning: or running trains :open_mouth: I’m going to try a few things( Preen & more Preen ) so I don’t have this problem again. Meanwhile, on New Years Eve I headed up into the woods to harvest some more moss. The road bed and track bed along the freight depot spur were blending together and needed a little contrast to distinguish them. Since the moss was working out quite well, why tamper with success  The triangular space to the left of the spur will house the yet unbuilt freight depot. Slowly but surely covering up some of the gravel which drains so well but doesn’t look so good. Ralph

Is the school finished yet Ralph? It is a nice structure.

Seeing it reminded me that a one room American schoolhouse was on my list of ‘should dos’. Like many over a certain age you forget things and worst of all where you put that list.

Just Wondering Ralph, Are you track power or Battery power. Nice RR by the way.

Nicholas Ralph runs both track and battery.

Not yet Alan. I've had a lot of trouble with glue failing. The only building I have that hasn't fallen apart was glued with CA. So I'm going to order some of the Weld-On 16 Bruce uses and stock up on CA before jumping back in structure repair & building.

Thanks, Nick.
I was 100% track powered at one time. But I had to run my Locos at a fairly high speed, as it’s mostly aluminum sectional track.
So I’m switching to battery as time & money allow.

Ralph have you thought about the critter control and using a battery car? I found it to be the cheapest way to get battery power.

I have had some issues with various glues. I generally use mastic on my structures; it hold far more permanently in my climate.

Shawn, I really like remote control. I've thought about a battery car too. But I really only have one 10 wheeler that will be pulling freight. I have two 10 wheelers to convert, but the other will be hauling passengers. The Railtruck and Railbus won't be pulling any cars. And the F40PH hauls coaches, that don't match anything else I have. So I just don't think a battery car would be any help. Ralph

Ralph,

Do you do anything to your soil when you plant the moss. I’ve been trying to get the moss to grow on a part on my RR and it doesnt seem to take. It is harvested about 500 yards from my house and is in the same sun-shade as where I got it. Not sure what I’m doing.

i really like Colorado Scale Models because the owner is a great guy and some of the models are based on structures a couple hours away. I too have had trouble with glues. My luck has improved after I started sanding the corners lightly and adding wood braces where I can. Also I use styrene cement on some and five minute epoxy on others.

Jake,

I have heard that yogurt - the live type not fancy flavored is a help in getting mosses to grow. It grows here quite well where the sun does not touch.

BTW I like your RR name. Didn’t Calamity Jane ride it?

LOL…Suddenly the image of Jamie Lee Curtis doing “Activia” ads for model railroaders just popped into my head. “Keeps you and your trains running regular”!

No Jake,
The moss grows anywhere I put it. Seems to grow just as well, if not better, on gravel.
At various times some of it might turn brown. But when conditions improve, it greens right back up.

As for the sun, I dig up moss that grows in sunny areas of the woods. I don’t harvest any from the darker places.
Most of what I get I dig up from the trails where it gets a fair amount of sun.

MEK works great for glueing (actually welding) plastic buildings as well (its also very inexpensive). It’s a bit watery, but if you clamp everything together and then let capillary action pull the MEK in, it works great. I glued a bunch of Colorado Model Structures together a few years back and so far so good.

Kevin,
You’re right about MEK. It’s just a bit harder to find now a days. The local hardware no longer carries it.
I don’t make it to the “big box” stores very often. But next time I do, I’ll be looking for it.

I’ve never seen it in California.

Sherwin Williams Paint stores have it......it's also great for working in closed spaces with no ventilation! ;)

I tell you, I think that Rooster is a tad homicide-maniacal ... mebbe a firebug, too ...

Ventilation??? Oh, that explains it…
BTW- Home D also sells MEK.
