Confused about G or large scale RR

Terry, Tim, Tony and Warren

Thanks for the info. Since my father and uncle worked on the Santa Fe RR from 1939 to 1960 in Emporia, Ks and since Emporia at that particular time period was a middle division exchange point, I am certain that I will model the Emporia yards, roundhouse, etc. that existed during this time period and I am planning on modeling the 2 track main line that run from Emporia to Topeka, Kansas City and a couple of the shortlines from Emporia to Americus, Olpe and Madison. Since the Santa Fe RR was still using steam and early model diesel loco’s, such as 4-6-2 Pacific, 2-8-2 Mikado’s , 4-8-4 Northerns and a smaller 2-6-2 steam loco that I am not sure what class it was for their short line service and ALCO RS-3, ALCO P-A, EMD GP9, F-3 AND ALCO S-4 switchers diesel power.

As you can see I may be undertaking a huge project that may overwhelm me but I love model and prototype RR and if this project overwhelms me, so be it!

Since I am planning on modeling an American RR in the 1950’s time period I believe it would be best for me to use Aristocraft and USA TRAINS locos, etc.

Again thanks so much for the advice and help. This is a great sight, the best I have found so far.

Dick,
Except for the above, all your other choices are available from various Large Scale manufacturers.
(But you prolly know that already.)

No Northern as yet, but Aristocraft have been testing the waters with the odd reference to a 1/29th version of the SF Northern #3751 - even though it's not our favourite, SP&S A3 #700, I wouldn't say no. BTW, get out your calculator and figure out the size of this thing in 1/29th...about 43 inches..... : O

…and Aster have announced the GN S2 Northern for delivery next year in passenger duty Glacier Green and freight black. Price to be about the same as the current pricing on the Berkshire, say $6500 or so, even though it has more wheels and fancy colouring-in.

Make a great Empire builder train, eh? ; )

Since you seem to be firmly decided on 1/29, you ain't got no choice of makes. ; )

Ah, yes. A Monster!
Seen it once under full steam roaring past me and later idling at the yard.

If we have to wait for the AC Northern as long as AC has been promising its standard gauge 2-8-0, thats gonna be a very long wait indeed! I’m still shocked at the absolute dearth of smaller standard gauge steam locos like the 0-6-0, 2-6-0, 2-6-2, 2-8-0 or other similar COMMON engines in large scale. PS I disagree strongly with 3751 not being a favorite…if you have ever seen her up close and personal, she looks great! and the Northern was one of those engines that almost literally every line had by WW2.

Dear Mr Smith - please fill your boots with YOUR opinion, Sir. But please read what I wrote.

In my post I am tabling MY opinion for me and my family, not a general consensus of opinion throughout the USA. SF Northern #3751 is not MY favourite.

I personally would prefer to see #700 because I know the locomotive on a ‘close up an personal level’. I have sat in the cab, ridden behind and watched it running by, got covered with smuts, and soaked with steam from the drain-cocks - is that ‘close-up and personal’ enough for ya?

Funny old thing is that I have done just the same thing with #3751. It’s just that #3751 is based in California, and I spend 99% of my time in the PNW in Oregon.

Feel free to check out the receipts from the paying supporters of both locomotives’ preservation societies - you’ll see mine right there in them, every year for the last fifteen years.

That’ll do ya.
