Large Scale Central

Coming back to the hobby

Post Separation and Divorce I am coming back to the hobby. I was asked this past fall to set up and run my trains for a Boy Scout Jamboree. That was enough impetus for me to get the unfinished portable live steam layout out and get the legs installed and make it functional. It isn’t painted or pretty but it held up to a one hour drive on the trailer to and from the Allegany County fair grounds where the Jamboree was held. I had the live steam running on that table and set up a switching layout as well on 4 banquet tables in the hall they gave me to set up in. IT gave me my train “mojo” back and I’ve been slowly dusting off the trains and thinking about projects since then. First was to find all my old links to Large Scale train websites. A lot has changed in 3 years. I see a few of my old online friends are still around?

I have some plans to expand my small loop in the yard this spring. A few other projects will keep me busy too.

Chas

Welcome back!

Hey Chas, Glad to see you back. Glad you got to keep your trains. I think I’ve finally learned not to ever just put the hobby on hold completely to get other things in life done. It only leads to a grouchy me. If I only devote an hour or two a week it’s enough to make me smile through all the other crap life throws at you! Glad your having fun!

Welcome back!

Welcome Back. In your interim the community lost Mik ( Allan Bupp) a year ago. Sad Loss.

BUT: Your just in time to get in on “Mik’s Build Challenge 2015” A great way to get back in the swing of things.

Damn, I knew MIK wasn’t well. We conversed a lot and I even got down to his area a few times but was never able to be there when he was home. I purchased a lot from him too. Loved his crazy cheap builds!

Hey Chas, welcome back! Now get out that snow shovel and get to work.

Welcome back Chas

Welcome back. I tend to slide a bit on the hobby but I always come back from the break. Ya spent about 10 years after the Divorce not being involved in the hobby so it was good to get back in it but things sure changed a lot. Played catchup for a long time. Later RJD

Hey Chas- Good to see you here, again!

-Kevin.

Welcome back.

Welcome back!

Thought I recognized that name! Welcome back indeed.

Welcome back Chas. If I remember correctly, didn’t you live close to Buffalo, NY? And how’s the snow situation?

Thanks again guys!

@Hans, Yes I live a little more than an hour south of Buffalo. I am essentially on the edge of the normal “Lake Effect” snow belt. The potential is always there that the belt will set up and dump a LOT of snow on us but usually it is farther north. The lady I am dating lives in the southtowns of Bufflao and literally had 7 feet of snow in her driveway when they got hit last month. I picked up a new snowblower for her and delivered it once they lifted the driving bans. Took me close to 10 hours to clear her driveway and then we went and rescued a co-worker of hers up the street. Another 4 hours there.

At one point prior to the major life change I had worked for Cutco in Olean but that empoyment ended about the time the marriage did. I worked for a company in the Jamestown area for three months and they essentially closed their doors. I now work an hour drive in the opposite direction from home. For a company that manufacturs and repairs equipment for the Oil & Gas industry. Again the weather can be challenging but the new hobby is dash cam photos of the sunrises and sunsets. My Cell phone mounts to the dash and I keep the camera set so I only have to tap the screen to take photos.

The new job is interesting. I still work as a mechanical product designer using Solidworks and a 2D drafting program that can open AutoCAD drawings but this job is much less drafting oriented and MUCH more paperwork heavy. I do Data entry and Quality Assurance paperwork more than I do any actual drafting anymore.

I lost a few of my files when I left Cutco though. The 3D models of my Wellsville Addison & Galeton 125 ton GE Center Cab are gone. I will need to recreate them. I ahve one last hard drive/thumb drive to check and I cannot get to it right now in my office at home. But I do not think I have the files anymore.

Hoping to get parts printed when I do get them re-created though.

Chas

Hi Chas - Welcome back! One good thing about your hiatus is the evolution of 3D printing!

I don’t recall how long ago I changed RR names, but you might recognize the old name/logo…

Snowblower?! When I was a kid we had to walk 30 miles to school in the snow in psuedo-leather shoes–after we shoveled our way out of the house!

So your lady lives in the south towns. My cousin lives in Elma and my old Bflo buddy, in West Seneca, where they were snowed in for four days. My other cousin lives in Daktah country where they got only a few inches. But then, you already know how that works.

Would it be too smarmy to say it was in the seventies today?

Good to see ya back Chas.
