Large Scale Central

Colorado fires

Anyone here in CO? Hope everyone’s safe from the big fires out there. The situation looks pretty grim in some places.

So far, no one in harm’s way of the Waldo Canyon fire that I know of in terms of large scale folks. I’ve got a few non-train friends who have been evacuated. Most of the LS guys in the Colorado Springs area are on the east side of town up in Black Forest, or down in Pueblo some 45 miles south. But it’s REAL bad right now. They’ve evacuated some 10,000 people between I-25 and the foothills, including some barracks at the Air Force Academy. If anyone knows a good rain dance, we’ll be happy to do it.

I’m just across the NM border from Durango. The three fires in the SW part of the state, a relatively small by the big fire standards. One of the members of the San Juan Large Scalers (my club) has been evacuated form the Mancos fire (at 9000 acres and only 15% contained), He and his wife are helping at the evac center, and the State Line fire is in a pertly sparely lived area of the Southern Ute Reservation ( about 800 acres and 60 % contained).

Reading about the Colorado Springs evacuation. This is an especially scary pic.

The chapel at the Air Force Academy. EEK!

Bob;

That photo does resemble something from a science fiction movie. Hope this fire storm will soon be subdued.

Thanks,

Kevin;

Maybe we should all start washing our cars. That usually works about as well as a rain dance for me.

Hope it gets subdued soon,
David Meashey

Kevin,
I wish you could have some of our rains!
Frog strangler most of yesterday up here. It would have doused all your fires.

And Florida would be happy to send all of theirs to Colorado. Hope everyone stays safe.

The last time I was in Colorado we missed a chance to see Mesa Verde due to big fires. I think that was 12 years ago now.

My brother-in-law’s house is in West Colorado Springs, just east of W. Woodmen Rd. According to the fire map I’m looking at online, the fire is within about two blocks from his place.

Dang, Ray, hope he and his stuff is OK. Friend-of-a-friend in CS got a “Get out now” knock at the door this morning; I guess the fire doubled in size overnight and caught a lot of the area un-evacuated.

I wish I could send some of the rain water we received your way. My pool gained about 5" in a couple of days, and I was on the western fringe of the thing. I understand that some portions of the state got as much as 14". I did see on the news that Jacksonville had some seriously flooded streets.

Best wishes to all in the ‘HOT’ zone.

Bob C.
