Large Scale Central

Collections and afterlife

There’s an impassioned plea on Facebook from Manny Reale, a guy who buys collections and resells the items.

He asks everyone to please write down what you want to happen to your trains should something unfortunate happen to you. His concern was triggered by a call from a lady whose husband died in a car crash at the age of 38. [Yes, it can happen to anyone.] She had thrown away most of his trains, only keeping a few of his favorites. Manny even included a short list of reputable dealers.

Going along these lines, we, the wife and I, have been selling off a lot of the train related stuff that i have collected over the years and will never get around to using.
I have also passed a lot on to a young man in our local club who is train crazy and very serious about his hobby.
I have also made contact with the State of Oregon Parks Dept. at the Collier Logging Museum and they are very receptive to receiving my logging models for display at the park.

At 80 you have to look the future straight in the eye and make decisions that you really would rather avoid. Statistics being what they are I don’t want my wife to have to deal with any more than she has to when I kick the bucket.
Now go back to more pleasant train topics and forget this post

no.
many of us are old enough, that forgetting comes by itself.
the important thing is to remember and execute all these unpleasant things, like last will and all the other related paperwork. :unamused:
(lest you want to deal out the last kick of a longer marriage war)

Good idea, I’m pretty sure my wife would want to try to sell everything but I don’t think she knows who might be able to help. I should leave a more detailed note referring who to contact. Trainz in Georgia is probably the best source to liquidate a large collection because they use Ebay to sell nationally, but Milepost 28/Arnies Trains and Trainshack out here are also good for local sales. I’m planning to downsize my stuff in the coming year to get the collection down to something manageable that befits the indoor layout and will be selling some stuff at the two shops. I’ve already gifted some building models from the outdoor layout to a local G guy and am planning something similar for two other local G guys including Patrick on this forum. Between local, Trainshack and Milepost 38 I hope to get the collections trimmed down. I will try to sell the more interesting stuff here first but alot of stuff is pretty basic stuff just too large for the indoor layout.

My boys gonna snag my house, retirement account, cars and assets then call 1-800 got junk and a year later he’ll be living in his high mileage 1997 Volvo wagon down by the creek with his Mickey Mantle rookie card he was finally able to purchase.

Then of course this is my biggest fear…

https://www.youtube.com/@stopmanny Interesting collection of videos……

Jerry B. and I had dinner together this evening, and the topic came up. I’ve not done much at all in prepping for this, but it’s becoming clear that I need to take some steps, but not quite sure what they are. Examples that come to mind:

  • Make a list of very special contacts who would give good advice / help.
  • Make a list of who gets what special items (whether they want it of not )
  • Contact a couple of local clubs and see if they have contacts for this sort of thing
  • Write down a list of auction houses / etc. that my wife could call, and they’d just deal with everything else.
  • Notes to wife on selling the house (e.g., the buyer would need a dumpster and front-end loader to get rid of ~500 bags worth of concrete mountains & roadbed)

OK, now it’s sounding like too much effort on my wife, so I gotta simplify…

But, while we’re at it, can anyone else add to this nice morbid list?

:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

tell the wife, to gift everything train related to your grandchildren.
your children and their spouses will be eternally gratefull, that they have a reason to amplify their houses…

Wife and I just renewed our will, made one daughter executor another health proxy and the tired is to keep and eye one the other two. We also put our house and property in a land trust to all three of them, that’s to keep the state from taking it if we go into old folks home. Th rest we are making a list of who gets what, some of things we are not sure who to give it to, like the trains nobody has shown much interest.
