Collecting

Suddenly, playing with trains doesn’t look like so bad a hobby, does it?

People will collect anything. That proves there are people crazier than model railroaders. He must have one - B I G - belly to come up with that much lent.

Heck I have him beat by a mile; except I don’t take pictures so I can’t show anyone my collection.
I collect toenail clippings. Never fingernail ones; they are usually of a different thickness, and it is not Kosher to mix the two when seriously collecting.

When I started collecting way back in June, 1951; I made a decision that it had to be toenail clippings, and the date of each clipping session had to be recorded.
Remember that this was before computers, and each had to be recorded in ink, on a proper manner on paper, with the exact weight and time of clipping marked down and blotted with a proper ink blotter.

I have since made copies of each page and entered all into a computer specially purchased to keep track of my wonderful collection

I was told that a certain person has made enough money with his LGB collection to purchase an automobile, but I refrained from telling him that he was a sham as a true and dedicated collector.
A real collector never parts from his collection. He/she/it, never lets thoughts of the almighty dollar come between his/her/it’s collection and him/her/it’self.

I thot that was where Brei and Camembert cam from, or is that lower down on the continent ?

The way I see it, there are three basic types of people in hobbies like model railroads:

  1. Model railroaders. These are people who buy (or build!) trains to run them, and includes everyone from the “toy train” guys to the “serious model railroaders”.

  2. Collectors. These are the folks who buy stuff just to have it, with little or no intention of every running it.

  3. Investors. These are similar to collectors, except that they only collect with the intent to cash in later. These are the guys who never take anything out of the box, and are aghast when someone weathers a loco because it “ruins the value”.

The same divisions can be found in most other hobbies too.
