Large Scale Central

Coal dealer

I was never one to have a single project going at a time. The original plan for the coal dealer at Williamsport was to have a trestle dump type, but I found this gem of a building. Apparently it is still extant up in VT. Crosby’s Coal.

There are a few kits out for it, in everything from N to O, so its been well researched and photographed.

And the site plan for the prototype

I could use one of them…iffen I had the room for it…

The siding is interesting, too, its not clapboards. Its what is called “Novelty siding”.

You live in Vermont then Bob?

Nope, in MA, but I know where that building is, driven by it a number of times.

Shiplap, maybe?

German or Dutch lap by the locals here

Or V-Groove if you’re getting it from Precision Products.

Or PVC board and use a nail or something to groove it every 8 inches.

Does this mean you need more PVC board?

More 1/4", yep. Sigh…

Been known to be called all of the above and I can't think of anymore names for it. Most architecture books refer to it as shiplap siding though.

If your gonna get anal on each board the upper edge is actually a cove and the bottom is flat T&G for the next board.

Edit for …when will it be done?

Me too..on the coast (Beverly) Did not know you we're "local" ;)

I know I’m getting into this late, but you might consider one of these… also seen all over New England. Track pit for dumping, elevator up the side for loading… and chutes for dispensing on the other side.

Matthew (OV)

Matthew - Does that still stand in Essex? I don’t recall seeing it, and I’m guessing that since the pictures are from the 70’s it’s gone.

Gone as of about 1980 or so, best guess. As I undestand it, what was once the coal dump pit is now the engine service pit, but I wouldn’t swear to it.

I think it’s Rooster lap
