They are still cleaning up the Banff derailment

What’s in a name?

CP’s latest in this provincial jurisdiction;

Reportedly close, but thankfully outside of the city !

Although early reports said derailment closed down the hwy for awhile, which would bring more attention to it 'cause it caused people (some) inconvenience.

Regionally CP is (seemingly) getting real sloppy; http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/train-derailment-inglewood-calgary-feb-18-2016-1.3453159

http://globalnews.ca/news/2525195/emergency-crews-rush-to-train-derailment-in-southeast-calgary/

Looked like majority of cars flipped over were empty lumber bulkheads.

At least this latest had a crew on board!

Another recent cp one in town (last month ?) occurred when utilizing a remote sys op’ by a employee who reportedly had another derail incident on file ! They (corp.) are pushing for its use even on mainline operations to cut costs (of course).

Sorry olde news item so deleted!

Class 1s including CN & CP are wanting to run remote regular compiled trains on their mainlines !

You would think that the belt packs would be designed with a safety, if the receiver doesn’t receive a signal in such and such amount of time, it stops the locomotive.

This is why computer controlled, wiz bangs, scare the you know what out of me. I have seen too many bugs in computer programs, or programs freeze because it encountered an un thought of scenario. That’s just annoying with a desktop computer program, but when we start talking about computers controlling vehicles that could easily kill people, I cringe.

We need Hans to return and help to make us feel more secure…he added a great bit of prototype drama to this section of a slowly dying forum…to say nothing about the almost dead chat group…all the “Excitement” left when some controversial characters were banned… but then I’ll probably be chastised for even mentioning it…BRING BACK HANS, And DAVE GOODSON…!!!(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

We need some LIFE on this web page, and the LS HOBBY in general.

Fred,

Perhaps you could start a “poll” and ask our community at Large Scale Central whether or “not” they would like to vote and allow the “excitement” to return or “not”?

Hans resigned. HE stated so in a post.

Beltpacks do have safety features, but when you are switching without air, there is only so much they can do. They are restricted to 15MPH, so for it to have reached 29 MPH, it was too much weight for the engines to handle. Good thing a hill stopped it.

They have converted a few SD40Qrm’s to beltpack and I believe they can operate up to 25MPH, but I think only Vancouver and the Winnipeg hump use them.

Shane, and that is what scares me. I have seen cars just wander away on their own. Even on a slight grade, they can pick up speed rather quickly. Then to think that they could be shoved to a grade by remote control, so they will start rolling downhill with a higher starting speed. That could get really out of hand, really quick.

Edit for the edit that I edited.

A very valid concern David.
