For the longest time I wanted to do an indoor layout but never had a spot in the house. Then my daughter got a new bed and because it was bigger, we had to use the mattress from our spare room. Since the room has been vacant since spring I figured it was fair game now. I took it over.
My original plans called for an 0N30 or G scale layout. But did I want something permanent especially if we had plans on moving. Then I got thinking. I have always liked the look of an older prewar style layout, with the tin Litho buildings and trains. But the problem was the cost of the older Lionel and American Flyer trains. Then thanks to Vic I remember he was into Marx trains and saw that he had some Clockwork trains. I started googling clockwork and found a lot of stuff on ebay and some great web sites. The last few weeks I started collecting clockwork trains and track for a layout.
The layout is 7x4ft with an outer loop that connects to an inner figure 8. I got the track plan from this site. http://nfrailro.ipower.com/clockworktrainsoperating.html I really like the operating plan especially for clockwork. I did modify the track plan. I took out the middle loop. My future plan calls for a yard area like the one from the link below. I just have to find a few more switches and a turn table. Little by little I want to get some more tin litho structures and accessories. My goal is to keep it pre war or as close as I can. Although I did cheat on my outer loop. I had to use Lionel 42 inch track with the center rail removed. Here is the layout so far.
Kewl!
Shawn,
A very nice beginning for your clockwork layout! Now you can start thinking about recycling & regauging those 4’ diameter curves no one wants into O gauge track for an outdoor layout to run you clockwork trains on…
Dave
Dave I just ordered a Maccano 1 clockwork motor. My plan is to make a train for the outdoor layout. Something like my backwoods steamer or a cricket.
That came out great Shawn.
Vic thanks for the track. I was able to complete the figure 8 and the extra will be for my yard.
I went to the First Frost train show in Allentown today. Picked up a nice Hornby M1 for 20 bucks, a nice Ives engine for 40 and a Marx tin tunnel for 5 bucks. I just need to get keys but they are easy enough to get or make.
Rooster my son bought a HO set with a diesel.
Glad I could help. Beats it just sitting on a shelf gathering dust. Sound like some good deals, post some picks when you can.
Vic I was surprised how much clockwork they had at the show. Most were expensive and they either had parts missing or dealer didn’t know if it worked.
Here is what I got.
Just click on link. Not sure why I cant post pictures. I put link in and it comes up as three separate links. Grrrrrr

Been happening to quite a few folks recently. Did you just upgrade your browser to IE 10 ?
If you edit out the extra stuff it should work.
On Tinypic try the “Direct Link for Layouts” Should give you this…

Thanks Jon. When I post the direct link it posts the same link three times together. Then when I try to edit, the link does not show up. It was fine before site went down.
Again I ask; Did you just upgrade to IE 10? Seems that it has a habit of screwing up copied links.
Jon I havent done any upgrades. Unless my computer did it automaticaly but I dont think it did.
Very cool Shawn.
I have some Marx sparkies.
Haven’t done anything with them yet. Need to get some track.
Ralph
Sweet Shawn.
great work as always shawn
Looking good Shawn, just need some trees and buildings.
I finally acquired two more switches. I was able to start working on the yard. area. I have not had any luck winning a turntable for the yard area so I decided to make a temporary one until I can find one. I just used a lazy susan spinner and added a handle. Still have to paint it and rust it up some. Eventually I want to get a an engine house and I still need a few more sections of straight track to connect the back end into the . The front is connect.
Cool! I think that’s pretty unique - why change it?
I’m following along with a great deal of interest, Shawn! I love what you’re doing. My own first trainset was a clockwork tinplate by Chad Valley. There’s a lebel to Google for ya! Cheers!
