Clockwork engine

I finally got my hands on a Hornby 1 clockwork motor. My plans are to make something to run on the outdoor layout. My plan is to use a chain driven system using gears etc… One idea I have is to build a clockwork version of my live steam backwoods engine. Another option is make a clockwork Cricket. I could get the main frame without the boiler. A few other options would be something like this

or

Here is where I got the idea behind clockwork for outdoors

The clockwork motor Im using. It has forward and reverse.

Any other ideas that I might be missing for a geared driven engine?

very interesting.

Shawn,

I could be wrong about this but I think that Marc H of Garden Railways has been doing “clock work” trains in the garden for several years. I think I remember reading where they had regular meets to run nothing but clock work/windup trains.

Might check there for additional info.

Rick

Thanks Rick. Yes mark had an article in GR a few years back. That’s what put the idea in my head. The link I posted has some of his clockwork stuff. Some neat things. Now all I need is to make a solar powered trains and then I think I have all the power sources covered lol…

Here is Shawn’s clockwork motor…

I’m wishing you luck cause I wanna see it when you succeed !

These may help a bit for parts

This site is a bit tough to navigate but there are parts available

Try not to hurt yourself ok!

I’m thinking a ladder chain not a roller chain …gotta have that backwoods and era feel to it

I used to build lil crittery things using Servolink delrin chain and sprockets… good stuff…

Thanks for the links guys. Ill have to see what gearing ratio will work best. I do more research chain driven engine.
