According to the books I have, those are part of the siphon systems they used. The RR only had one standing water tank, but water was abundant in all the streams and rivers, so they just siphoned it in to the saddle tank on the loco. Somewhere around here I have another picture that shows it better. Lemme see if I can find it.
Here it is. You can see the pipe going up to near the hatch of the saddle tank. They had a short length of hose that would go from the end of the pipe, into the hatch.

As does No 3, though its in un-restorable condition, and has been stuffed and mounted.

And some log bunks that are with No 3. A note that the EBL was the last std gauge RR to use link and pin couplers. They used them up into the 1960s, when logging ceased.

Cool, thanks for the pics. I like the 2-4-2, seems like it would be a good loco for my layout. Maybe I can bash one out of a Bachmann Porter.

Did it a while ago, now I can actually run it.
Cale:
As a Dolly Vaden fan, consider NE Narrow Gauge sloped gons! Nice little kit and published in Garden Railroader. They also hauled flats, oil, boxcars, and timber.

The plans alone are also available from Sidestreet Bannerworks. Fun to build and easy on the pocket!

both look nice!
I was playing around doing some searches and came across this post. I though it was intresting because I got the hartland big john i want to creat the 1800 log industry. I was originally going to get some log disconnects. Didnt realize that for the most part east coast used the flats. This saves me some money especially since hartland still has those flats for 14 and change. I was going to use my BACHMANN big hauler flat and get a few more of those glad I didnt. What about box cars for that period? what would work better a hartland box or bach big hauler?
Cal were you able to get those flats painted? Any pictures of the set up with the engine and flats?
The first picture with the climax going over that small ravine gives me an idea using logs to fill in a gap on my RR
Man, I haven’t had time to do anything except unpack my order from WST on the HLW cars…sry!
I’d say that you could get away with using a Bmann Big Hauler Box, even a HLW since you will be pulling with a 1/24 engine…LGB box would work as well!
Kevin did a series of articles in GR last year about scale there were some pretty telling pictures there!
