Chuckawalla Slim

Some of you have probably seen this,Chuckawalla Slim was rather well known and traveled the west selling rocks and minerals.

I would like to put together my version.

I’m looking for parts or even a character who would be Chuckawalla Slim. Anyone have anything in their parts boxes they’d like to sell?

When he’s ready, send him my way I need more rocks.

I think Slim needs to be g scale. I couldn’t see him to make him smaller!

Doug:

Perhaps this Railroad-Line post will be of help though it is not for large scale. There was also an article (I think) within the past couple of years in the Narrow Gauge & Short Line Gazette regarding modeling this, again not in large scale.

Thanks Mark. I stole that picture from Railroad Line and it is my inspiration… I have known several of these characters over the years of being a rock hound and even though he died before I was born these old rock hounds are very much alike. Even though my dad was a defense industry accountant he was never far from Slim and several of their friends were Slims. And I have rock hunted at Chuckwalla on our low desert here in California. Igot a few nodules from a “Slim” who probably knew Slim.

Boomer, my interest in scale is 1.22.5 to 1.20.3. I have a mixture on the layout of all three so I’m not picky. Heck, I even have true new Piko mogul that is supposed to be 1.29 and the only thing I think is 1.29 is the coupler height which took some tinkering when I put a Kadee on it. They didn’t provide a coupler on the front so that’s going to take some saw work!

try using Ric’s scale… 1/21.4

Neat project.

Another person did it in 1:48 scale. There’s some pretty good tips in there to help you on the way.

For people, I’d take a look at some of ScaleHumans people…you just have to be willing to modify them.

Give this guy a new hat, and he could be sitting on the running board.

There are other possibilities there as well, it just depends on how ambitious you want to be at modifying some existing figures.

Supply Line also has some other possibilities, plus they offer some other close scales.

Depending on your scale, I’d recommend Hubley vehicles for 1:20; you’ll probably have to get them from ebay.

There’s also some pretty neat diecast stuff in 1:24 that would serve as a starting point for that truck.

I have one of these, if it would help. Its 1:24th scale, supposedly.

Thanks Bruce. This will really be a fun project.

It’s all coming together. I want to design the sign for the canopy and other than working on my design I can do it I think.

I don’t have great design skills and poor eyesight but I just use the magnifier on the large computer screen!

My wife has some muslin-type material for doing photo quilts that you feed through the inkjet printer. I think the material looks right. I just need to do the designing.

David, is my guess correct, that you got that from that LSC member in Monterey, ca? I got one too and considered cutting the box but I didn’t want to cut it up!

I have often wondered what happened to him!

Doug, no. I went to Toys R Us back when they had them on sale for $5 each. I think I spent like $25

You’re who sent that to me? I thought of mine when I saw that truck.

That dude would fit right in my era.

Anyone notice the swastika in the middle of the advertising before the name SLIM?

IIRC, counter-clockwise swastikas are seen in American Indian art, though I’m not sure which tribe or tribes used them.

Thanks for that. I know that the reverse swastika is a symbol in Indian (as in sub-continent India) culture too. Interesting to see it there.

I used to go to hunt for rocks (agate mostly) in Chuckwalla springs, CA… note slight difference in spelling.

Never saw that guy

Greg

That way around the swastika is a good-luck charm sign. I have one that was a bringback momento from India in around 1840, made from a George IV penny.
