Large Scale Central

Christmas three days late

Got a call last night from a long-time friend.
“Come on over” he says.

On the kitchen counter were 4 large boxes.
He explains before we open any, it’s “all or none”.

All OLD H0.
40-50 pieces of rolling stock, Varney (metal), Mantua (metal), Ulrich, Silver Streak, Skyline building kits never assembled, motorized turntable, power packs, but the engines…

I restore and rebuild old die-cast H0 engines, have a bunch on display.

In this box was:

Two Varney Old Lady 2-8-0’s.
One Athearn 0-6-0 (I’ve seen pictures only)
One Hobbyline 0-4-0 Yardbird switcher.
But the last one…

An early (SP Style) Varney Super Mikado, fully sprung, V-2 motor…and it wouldn’t run.
Grease had congealed…cleaned it out, runs perfectly.
And, the tender had something I didn’t even know existed…Central Valley 6-wheel sprung trucks.
Good thing, too, as the tender is sand-cast bronze.

The newspaper in between layers was 1967.

Parts…geez.
Brand new Central Valley trucks, in original plastic boxes…brand new SilverStreak trucks in original yellow cardboard boxes…couplers…ladder stock…wheels…I filled a 4-drawer (8X10 drawers) with all the parts.

More stuff to display.

TOC

Wow…you truely met Santa Clause…Enjoy…

Nice present TOC. Varney was one of those that shouldn’t have gone under.

Great gift I have always loved the older trains especially the metal. I always see the old O gauge at antique shops but they want an arm and leg for them. Maybe some day I will get lucky

Merry Christmas, Dave. Sounds like TOC got a stockin full.

Sheesh Dave, if this keeps up you need an addition to house, soon. :stuck_out_tongue:

All those old names conjure up memories reading all those old Klambake books when I was a kid. Titles like “101 Track Plans” and “Practical Guide to Model Railroading” where everyone sported 50’s buzzcuts.

He has already done that! Maybe the cars will have to go next! Fat chance of that happening! Nice Christmas gift TOC.

Paul

Santa knows who’s been naughty and who’s been nice!

John

The more I dig into this stuff…

A pair of Ulrich tractors and trailers…die-cast.

Some of this stuff I remember seeing pictures of as a kid, never could afford any of it.

Suddenly it’s all falling into my lap.

See what happens when Santa figures you’re mellowing at an exceptional rate? Hard to tell where it will end, isn’t it?

HJ,
this looks like a remake of Jim Carey in “The Grinch”.

Tim,

When it comes to movies you (and everyone else for that matter) need to explain it a bit. I don’t get to the movies often, so I’m right out of the loop.
