Large Scale Central

Choo Choo Crates

I spent my weekend building crates for toting my trains to shows and meets. The inside dimensions are 24" x 20". I did one with three 24" troughs for my F3s and three with four 20" troughs for freight cars. This accommodates 40’ box cars, woodside reefers, tank cars, etc. I’ll probably build another long one at some point if I get some bigger box cars.

They stack, and there’s a shallow one for tools.

Ive been making some boxes for taking my stuff on the road too. 7/8th stuff is big though! Your boxes are much neater. It is helpful having them a common size so they pack neatly in the car.

Only three will fit in my Fiat, but I’m borrowing my wife’s Outback for Springfield.

I have boxes like that but mine have bees in them (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

Serious though, nice work. I wish I was so organized.

I like taking flat cars and gondola’s to shows … you can fit more as they stack easily… Eric very nice crates…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Those are good looking boxes. Are those your entry for this years Build Challenge?

What did you make them out of and how much do they weigh?

I’ve seen the messages go by about the build challenge, but haven’t come up to speed.

They are 1/2" sanded plywood, which isn’t terribly heavy. There are 1" wide strips on the bottom that keep them aligned when they are stacked. Dividers are 1/4" plywood. Each trough is 6" wide overall, including the 1/2" foam on each side. The bottom of each is lined with 1/2" rubber floor tile material (the stuff that looks like a jigsaw puzzle). The white foam is from ULINE.

Eric those look fantastic, but I think you are driving the wrong kind of car for this hobby (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

That’s where a mini van come in handy…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Specially when you have to haul half of Nicholas Smith’s inventory out to Nashville Il…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I concur with both sentiments.

My 1:20.3 coaches are 30+" long, and I have 5 plus a std gauge boxcar in 36" traveling carriers that stack. They won’t fit a regular car so I have had an SUV for years. The USAT coaches for my Hudson are still in original boxes, as that seemed the bext way to transport and store them - which makes a stack of 6 boxes about 36+" long. And then there is the lco carrier - the Hudson is 40" long. . .

Well, I’ve got a knuckle, in case I have to tie on more capacity.

Lessee, I have your license plate number now which could be traced easily to your residence…

Really like those boxes and especially the Marshall amp. And I could use a USAT F-3 Daylight engine…

I also really like that Kadee coupler on the back of your car, Eric! Didn’t know they made them that big!

You also have my name and the town I live in, which can be easily traced to my residence.

Hmm. maybe while I’m in Springfield this weekend, I can do a little shunting. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)Up until now, I have not seen another but I’m thinking we will not be the only two at the show.

Ha! Me neither. Is yours from Rail Driver?

Yes. I thought for sure it would break within a month or so but it’s been over 2 years now!

I have one, but I think from a different model. Aluminum?

These are plastic. The challenge was finding one for a 1-1/4" receiver. The 2" ones are more common, I think.
