Cheyenne Steam Shop at Thanksgiving

We were in Cheyenne over T-day. Grandkids were getting bored so I called Lynn to see if we could tour the UP steam shops on Sat. He said he could squeeze us in before another tour, nice guy! The rotary had been moved to the steam shop and was ready to go out if needed.

Kids had fun climbing in the locomotives. Here is my son and grandson in the cab of 844. It had it’s rods off, they will be getting the drivers turned. Challenger may have to have it’s boiler removed to fix something.

I climbed on top of the rotary to see what that looked like so I could finish my model of it.

Sorta proud the climb up was pretty easy!

So we were guessing, what did the top look like? You know I think the prototype has more wrinkles in the skin than your model does.

Wrinkle Counter :D :D

Good one Jon! Ric, the top has a narrow walkway of the diamond mesh, smaller than on the back. You can tell the size of it and the mesh by the rail you see on the back that is around it. Escape hatch up by the cab. I did not get on top to walk around, just looked.

So is it the same as the mesh in front of the intake by your leg in the picture? Or more like extruded metal? Boy, that looks like a monster. I’m sure it is a sight, underway and doing its job.

Ric, same shape mesh, just smaller. Look right at the top of the roof and you can see a little bit of it right above the right brace on the rear fan, right under the round railing on top. Sort of a diamond shape, with little ridges on top to help you not slip.

Oh. I know what that stuff is. Extruded metal walkway. Have you figured out what will work to duplicate it?

I’ve got some small copper diamond mesh, may just use it, after painting it silver. I have some bigger diamond stuff that is a real good match for the back grill.
