Large Scale Central

Chasing trains in the Canyons

left at 06:00, got back at 22:00.

Sixteen hours of fun; good weather with a bit of cloud and a breeze in the canyons … and “my dumb luck” applied once again. I was still doodling down Fraser Canyon looking for more action as an EB Intermodal came into view. 180º and back to North Bend where the crew change happens, next on to the Cisco bridges and then to a “haven’t tried this before” location at the westend of Thompson siding. Radio traffic indicated a “problem” and that got interesting when CN 5779 East got to “Thompson”. Two SD751 at the point and the lead unit conked out, which left a scant 4300hp. Not enough to get the whole train up through Thompson Canyon i.e. RTC Calgary had to decide. Funny how Murphy seems to have it in for the Eastbound track under CP RTC

Hazards along the way? Tread carefully, this is rattlesnake country!

Thursday was an almost perfect day (so there, Steve :stuck_out_tongue: ), even if there was less traffic than I expected. Anyway, it was time to head down the Canyons, they had the best weather forecast of any of the lines around here. And for a change it was accurate, lots of sunshine!

Picked up CP 8958 just East of Savona and follwed it all the way to Boston Bar — 100 miles on the rails, a few more on the road. There’s always some back tracking on the road.

Listen for the echo of the horn in the canyon east of Ashcroft.
