Large Scale Central

Changing scales!

I’ve been building the In-ko-pah Railroad in 1/24th scale for over 11 years now, and it’s time for a change. I like the level of detail and realism that can be achieved in Large Scale, but it’s still too small. I thought about switching to 1/20.3 scale but that’s only slightly bigger.

After giving this a lot of thought, I scrapped my existing layout and started a new one. It takes a lot more room, so I haven’t gotten very far yet. Just a little bit of scenery, some track, and a tunnel. And I finally finished building my first model, a 2-8-0 locomotive. As you’ll see in the photo below, this larger scale makes possible an extreme level of detail and realism, right down to the textures of every surface.

The photo shows me standing by the locomotive to give you an idea of how big it is…

You see, I figured out that the problem was in making models that are smaller than the prototype. By building in Really Large Scale, say about 4x prototype, it’s easy to make something that looks at least as good as the real thing. But it does use up a heck of a lot of styrene. Also, I think I’m going to have to expand my layout by annexing a state or two.

I dunno, man, are you sure you want to mix with that crowd? That scale doesn’t have rivet counters, it has molecule counters.

Ray, you’ll regret it.

not only, that you will have to buy glue by the barrel, but vermin can access your models throug the key holes of the doors.

to get scale-coal you will have to make field trips to pennsilvania… with a full size truck.

but your stone collection would be reusable. as ballast.

ps: if i would live nearer to you, i would visit you to help you to get rid of all these tiny models, that will be in the way.

Here’s your next project Ray

This discussion must end right NOW!

Don’t you both realize what you’ve done? God help us! Between the scale and the model, you’ve given Dave Taylor the perfect idea for next year’s Challenge.

Let’s hope Bob “moves” this thread before it’s too late.

I think it’s a great idea. You can use sequoias for saplings, and lions for tomcats.

Happy April fools day Ray!

Todd, have a look at the calendar! today is not fool’s day!

so Ray’s post must be serious.

you just better get used to the idea, that the word “Largescale” will have an enhanced meaning from now on.

Doh! It seems my little joke is a day early.

You know you want to model Amtrak Ray …I can sense it!

AMTRAK?

Nobody models AMTRAK unless of course they are getting subsidies (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Is that “Geeees” scale?

Adam

4:1 scale. Hmmm being in the public water business I have access to pipe in the 4"-12" range along with fittings. Should work well for outfitting locos for plumbing. We are going to scrap a 1 million gallon tank, but know I can use it as the boiler.

Ray, as a truck owner/ operator I will give you a great rate on hauling truck loads of 4’x8’ sheets of styrene, and can probably do a load of 55g drums of glue, but that may be Hazardous Materials , which I do not haul. Give me a call. Pete Lassen , owner , Lassen Trucking

Ray, once again your modeling skills have exceeded all expectations. The loco looks very realistic and the rock work in the background is simply amazing. But the one thing I cannot figure out is where in the world did you get that rail and what is it made of? Also, I want to see the workshop you are working in to build that behemoth.

Thanks Vic… Now I do have an idea for next years Challenge…

WOW are you guys gonna love/hate this one…

Mik will be so happy, he’ll wet himself from laughing so hard at all you guys…

No Problem Dave, ps theres always the back up plan:

Hi Ray… I thought I had responded to this… But it was on the “other site”

Here’s my thoughts…

I know it was a lot of work, but it sure was worth it.

That scale looks wonderful… Just wunnerful…

So glad you have so much time to be able to have made the change… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)
