Large Scale Central

Challenge 2 Geoff George

Ok. Not sure how to do a build log so I’m just going to take lots of photos and walk my way thought this. Step 1 the MOW car that my Railroad needs. The Rockhill branch of the SPC found that scrup brush ws becoming a problem and talked with the guys in the shop as to what they could come up with to help in this matter. Looking around the shop they found some items that were not in use and deside to put togather a weed killing MOW car. Useing a big tank they had for water they will munt it to a flat car they will build and have a pump house on the car as well as two booms so a worker can swing a hose out and spray the weeds. step 2. round up the parts.

Side note. This is my first ever try at building rolling stock also, being 1750 miles away from my house and most all of my train stuff I have had to come up with some new things. A stop at Michaels paid off in that I found basswood and some other stuff. I’m waiting on a set of trucks I got off ebay to show up and I can go from there.

…winking…

Ok. Today I stated on the housing for the pumps and controlls that will sit at the back of the weed car. here I am glueing the sub frame for the house togather. I’m using Elmers wood glue for outside.

In this picture I’m putting on the siding and roof of the pump house.

Hope the other parts I need will show up soon so I can get going on the flat car it is all going to sit on. The other thing is picking out colors for the MOW cars on my railroad. I’m thinking light green/dark green combo but I will have to see.

Made some progres on the pump house here are the photos of were I am. Hear I am still working on the siding for the building.

Hear is a view of one of the window shutters. kind of a cheet seeing I did not put windows in but this will give the ideal that they are there. On the lower right you will see that I am working on the hose real also.

I still need my underside and trucks to show up then I can work on the flat car body of it and get it to the paint shop. Seeing this is a new car it won’t be weathered. There trying to get it done so they can get her out there before the weeds start to grow. Side note it might work as a fire car as well. will have to see.

Ok the pump house , water tank, and hose real were all in the paint shop. The yard is still waiting for the parts for the flat bed to show up. Here is what the lay out on the flat will be. still have lots to do.

Glad to see someone else uses key keys as a modeling tool other than me!

David the keys are my best tool for doing any kind of work. I got my parts I was waiting on today so it was to work on the flat car. here is a shot of the parts being glued togather.

Should be able to get it into the paint shop this weekend and get her done.

In these two pictures I tried to get some of the smaller details. The first one is the hose reel. I used two 1" dowel rod caps for the ends and a small dowel for the roll. I then cut some basswood to make legs glue it all togather. The hand crank is small screw that I bent, and screwed in.

In this picture is the pipping for the the tank and pump house. Its a peice of wire from a house plant that some how died. I guess you need to water them ever now and then. Its going to be painted a gray color.

Now its off to the paint shop and see how the rest of the flat car is doing. They are hoping to get it done this weekend.

The car is all done. My first ever rolling stock build. The car is fresh out of th epaint shop and ready to hit the rails and go to work.

Great job Geoff. Looks like you got the essentials down. What happened to the two arms?

David
There seemed to be a problem between what the guys in the front office think they need and what the boys in the shop know they need. After a talk with the MOW crew the shop made the needed changes so the MOW crew could have what they need.

Good that the guys that use the equipment can alter the front office plans of what they need.Otherwise you’d be pounding in spikes when all you needed were a couple brads

Nice work, Geoff…

Now it is lettered and on the books. The front office has now ordered a flat car to go along with it. More on that to come.

Wow Geoff! That turned out good. Look forward to seeing it in person.

Well the front office wanted a flat bed for MOW work. Well the boys in the shop got one out in record time.

and here is it with the weed/fire car.

Can’t wait for train season now.

Looks Good Geoff,
I’m guessing the light green is the same light green used on your structures and is Valspar? If thats the case what is the color called as I really like it and gonna see if I can get it at our Lowes?

Thanks David Yes that is the Valspar (satin) . They dont list a color name had to go by the cap. I am very happy with the Valspar paint. Will have to see how it weathers the summer back in St. Louis. Seeing the MOW stuff is going to be on the logging line most of the time I painted it match the logging camp colors.

I’m working on some Coal cars now for the Clarke Mine. I’ll post some pictures of them later. Not sure Andy will like the colors but the boys in the paint shop have been having fun.
