cement tiles

Our local Hobby Lobby store has a kitchen hot mat that makes cement paving tiles by the hundreds when it is filled with a vinyl cement patching compound from the hardware store.

I made some for my lumberyard scene and i am going to use some for a patio in front of a travel trailer.

Clever idea James! Pics of the projects?

I could see the mats. Actually, as long as I don’t logon to the secure site, I can always see every video or picture posted. I was asking for pics of the projects made with the paving tiles.

So far I have made a couple of pallets loaded with the tiles. Will post photo later.

I plan to make a stack of them to use with my G scale copy of the Atlas lumberyard.

I also want to make the patios I mentioned for the travel trailer campground I am planning.

I am soaking some of the tile with food coloring in glass jars because I remember some dark blue and red tiles in the sidewalk in front of my grandmother’s

home in the 1950’s.

BD asked us all to re-log into the secure site. I guess you don’t believe him.(https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)

Yes Joe, I know I’m supposed to logon to the secure site. I’m told I don’t do sarcasm well.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

I would like to see how the tiles came out too… (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Here is the hot mat with the poured cement and the resulting tile.

Still working on dying some of the tile the red and blue I remember from the 1950’s.

Second try/second photo.

I estimate the size to be about 5mm wide. Is that about right?

The tiles are 1/4 inch wide.

The food dye finally soaked into the tile so now I have some red and blue tile.

Will post more photos later.

Cool.

Food dye won’t last though. You could mix paint into the mortar. I think a little acrylic or latex paint would do the trick.

I’d use CementAll, a low shrink patching cement and stucco tints, they are color fast and won’t fade like an organic food coloring…

I’ve used it to cast my buildings with great success…

I think also you can use unsanded grout, comes in many many colors, used between ceramic/stone tiles.

Pretty darn sure they are colorfast.

Has anyone tried it in molds?

Greg

For molds use non-shrinking grout. Its the best I’ve found for casting for outside.

Welcome to your weekend!

Does grout hold up well outdoors?

I think maybe Bob is referring to concrete grout which is used plug cracks in walls even when they are wet. The other non-shrinking cement grout is used to anchor bolts, etc. in floors. I have used both outdoors and they are definitely waterproof.
