Cedar Mountain Coal & Lumber No8

Should we try harder?

Day off…snow…cold…crappy…Abscond to The Bunker for some Shay work! I reused the rear sand box from the Bmann model, and fabricated a ladder for the rear. Also made up a headlight bracket…

With the cab shell basically done, into the paintshop for a primer coat. Also decided this was a good time to add the couplers to the chasis before adding any breakable details…

Looking very good. I just spray the black directly on the styrene. Am I missing something by not doing the primer?

Naaa I was just covering up the printing from the styrene’s previous life as a No Parking sign…

Bart, the re-build looks fantastic… Is this one gonna clear Ric’s shed???

Prolly not. Ric will be sure to add some close clearence items when he hears Bart is on the way

HEhee yes this one should even make it down into Ric’s Basement…its not really any larger than the stock Bachmann Shay…

looking good Bart.First time I’ve seen an orange shay

What did you Shay?

Gee I’ve seen several that color at Cass…but tis no longer in primer…

Little shinier than I intended, but nothing a good weathering job can’t undo!

Began details in that cab, Throttle, Johnson Bar and Engine brake stand installed (Shay 8 is not equipped for train brakes) In cab for a 42 ton Shay is not all that complicated…Moving out to the boiler details, did the dry pipe from the steam dome to the cylinder assembly…

Nuther Day…nuther dollar…well not really but anyways I got the cab controls done and started hanging the stuff off the boiler…The Air compressor was rescued off the Annie that was sacrificed for the 4-8-0 project, the generator is original equipment modified a bit. Everything else is various bits of tubing…

Pretty cool Bart.

Just to show Bruce how to finish a project… I’m done fabricating bits for Shay 8 and she’s ready for the paint shop. Front pilot…

Bart looks like you’re skipping right through this rebuild. Guess this one lost it’s headlight in the rebuild?

Well, that’s certainly come full circle. From a 1:20 Shay to a 7/8ths Shay and now back to a 1:20 Shay again. At least now it’ll fit on other peoples RR’s without leaving parts scattered hither and yon…

What did you Shay?

No....I generally wait til after general paint before putting the headlights on.....

Bart, mind if I ask how you bent the dry pipe? I’m learning and I think heat for some of the smaller ones, not sure on the larger diameter stuff. And do you eyeball or use a form?
