Large Scale Central

Cattle

for those in 1:20.3

Bought a sample Charolais cow (13610) from Schleich. Scales out to 1:20 (according to measurements on a breeders site). By the looks of the other cattle items at the store they should be the same scale.

I have a bunch of Schleich cows on the railroad. They do look great for 1:20.3. Their donkeys, horses, and pigs are also very very close.

Later,

K

I use a bunch of the animals as well. The Bears, deer ect also work out well. Too bad the Rooster is too big

Can't we just cut off his legs at the knees, and make him shorter????? :)

I seeeeee … you guys are on about THE ROOSTER!
Getting him to size has sounded like a chore for quite some time.

The only chore here in the mountains that involves Roosters is plucking and par-boiling them  Ralph

Who’ll be the first to model this…

Vic,

You realize that the cow will win on the average garden railroad, don’t you? There would be much gnashing of teeth and tearing of hair because the engine headed straight for the next rock or some other very abrasive object.

OK here are some of the critters

I have been using Schleich figures since 2003. They don’t sun fade and look great. I use more than just a few to create a diorama. If you want to sell the ones you no longer need. They keep their value. Dennis

Hi Dennis, I’m still debating the 10% question. The large bulk of our structures will be scratch built at 1:22.5 and so far I found the slight undersize of the POLA and Preiser critters(1:24/25) is less of a discrepancy.

Oh yeah the goats got new coats

Don’t concern yourself too much over scale size. People are more taken by the overall look and don’t really notice scale. It’s like that buffalo herd. No one really notices the trains. Regards, Dennis.

Wellllll, it all depends … first of all who is looking at it, secondly how familiar they are with the relative proportions of man made structures to living beings and in my particular case: do I want a garden railroad or do I aim for a model railway in the garden? In our garden we aim at the model railway (complete with compromises where and when absolutely necessary).

Of course there is another fly in the ointment: start taking “like real” pictures and all those scale compromises are much more obvious. :open_mouth:

Like Dennis, I’m slowly trying to build a bison herd. The main problem I am having is that each time I find one of the critters, the store stocks only one pose AND it’s a bull. (No wonder their numbers were declining!) So far I only have two Papo and one Schleich - all bulls. And YES, I’m sure because most of these figures are anatomically correct. Just check out a Schleich Texas longhorn if you don’t believe me. Anyway, I’m trying to avoid the heavier $$$ cost of Preiser, but may have to shell out for a few of their bison just to get some cows and calves. I also check toy and craft stores when we are traveling, so who knows what treasures I may still find.

“Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam, AND I’ll show you a stinky house!”

Yours,
David Meashey

Dave,

I’ll check the local store and let you know.

@ all BTW for what it’s worth I also have a bunch of Safari Ltd. figures on the way. Critter report to follow.
