Hello Everyone.
A few months back, Dora…the farm cat had a litter. Now her and the kittens have taken a liking to my RR. What is a good way to help keep them from doing business in my empire? I’m open to any and all suggestions.
Thanks
cale

This might get some interesting responses but it is a good question and if taken seriously (and I hope it does) should be helpful. We had a sand box for my kids that they never used because it was a giant litter box.
Hey Cale, How about a motion activated sprinkler. You can get them for $40-$50 and they run of a 9volt. Cat’s don’t likes water or sudden hissing sounds. Randy’s idea is probably the best short of a dog.
We now have a batch of little cute pudknockers running around our backyard. Not much I can do besides tempt them with string until they are old enough to be fixed and adopted off. Before my dog always kept the cats out of the back yard but after he passed away the kitteh’s just moved right in.
Not my pic but I’m dealing with 4 of these little guys,
We found if we use more DG rocks left over from our pathway and put it up around our garbage cans area. The 5 Kats we have seem to use that like a litter box but have to clean it up once a day. Least it keep them from doing there thing n the layout.
They still like to sleep on the tracks… not sure why…
This is Penut at our set up area that guys are trying to get some trains made up.

Got to love them tho. There like out kids.
Try orange peels. I had a problem with a neighbor cat “using” my yard. A couple orange peels kept him away and eventually gone for good.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
I have a gray cat that prowls my yard from time to time. He doesn’t soil my railroad though. I have blasted him with the hose a few times, so now he just transits my yard without stopping.

Great suggestion John. Cats hate any citrus, and generally steer clear.
Once my well meaning wife gave our one cats a few spays of an all natural citrus bug repellant, since she wasn’t going to pick up the normal Frontline stuff for a few days. A bit like my late cat. If you poked her with the cowcatcher she would just carry on sitting there and just hiss at the loco. Never did her business on the line, mistaking the ballast for kitty litter. That was the hedgehogs’ job. Was with me 20 years. As you say “like our kids”.
The rails and ballast warm up in the sun better than the grass. A bit like you and radiators, best places to sleep. Max
Get a live steamer! They hiss a nd spit in a language cats understand. I had to whistle for a crossing at a friend,s place when his dog was resting on the tracks…he moved in time!
Max,
that is a gorgeous cat.
I have just finished doing some repairs to my railway, the lovely newly spread dolomite gravel is very appreciated by our cats, I got sick of raking it over each day and removing doodoo’s, the petshop sells some evil smelling granules which are supposed to discourage dogs and cats using the area as a toilet. I only spread the granules today so I look forward to any reward in the morning, the reward being a doodoo free area.
I love my cats but then I hate my cats as well, but it is not just MY cats, I need to get another dog.

Thanks all! The Orange Peels seem to be helping! I’ll keep you updated!
Yea, glad something is working! Peanut, and Max’s late lady, are handsome critters.
Cats are a bit of a different factor for the indoor, small-time, railroader, https://youtu.be/HkItpYer-Nk
Update: I now have our little pudknockers totally addicted to string!
Vic you are the master at the GIF. Where do you come up with this stuff. You have an appropriate clip for everything.
Our last cat croaked 3 or 4 months ago. Cancer.
We went out last week any picked up two kittens, brothers, from the Humane Society. Three months old. One, jet black, the other, jet black with white gloves and boots.
Haven’t named them, yet. Every time one of us comes up with names, the other hates the names. We’ll probably end up with, “Thing One and Thing Two.” (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
How does, “Wog and Shellback,” sound? “Boot and Wog?” “Boats and Snipe?”
I’ll have to try the orange peels for a cat that keeps doing his business near the tracks, kicking up lots of dirt in the process. I think he hates me.
Cliff
PS, maybe this might come in handy for cleanup purposes.
Our last two cats were devils for turning the right of way into a logging area which was not pleasant. Tried the evil smelling powder, garlic, but they ignored it. Tried orange peel…RESULT!
However you have to replace the peel regularly which means an increased consumption of oranges which is good if you like them.
Our two new devils in fur, Malcolm and Poppy, will not do their business outside and prefer their dirt boxes.
Good luck with the peel.
Regards
David.
