car hauler vs train

car hauler vs train

After having worked checking in and checking out car haulers at an auto auction in late 1990s I don’t understand how anyone expected a car hauler trailer to clear that rise - using the Sheriff’s post I found the location on Google Street view but it only has street view available from Highway 77 side of the tracks, semi was approaching from other side,

Looking at the map makes it a bit of a mystery why the car hauler was on the east side of the tracks at that location;

location is just above where 77 and I-35 do an X,

Some things are just beyond some peoples ability to see an issue before it happens, thats about as the nicest way to say what i really want to say. Too many just follow goolge maps and do not do any kind of preview , that little blue line on the screen says “go here, turn here”.

Pete is too polite and politically correct. If you don’t know where you are going, you will likely not like where you end up. Someone needs to educate commercial vehicle drivers that GPS devices are NOT programmed for anything larger than a passenger car, at least the ones sold at large electronics outlets. And I doubt any company is going to invest the capital input to program all the ‘truck hazards’ into a device for the small segment of the market truck drivers represent.

In plain English …………. You can’t fix STUPID ………

With that said, I hope all those injured have a full and quick recovery.

Are you certain of that?

For instance,

"Since it’s a truck GPS, you can customize your route by putting the length, weight, and height of your truck into the GPS. "

“For instance, you will get to know the weight limits, speed limits, and designated roads for trucks. The last thing you want is to get stuck under an overpass bridge that is too short for your truck to drive through.”

Pete,

Not being a truck driver I have no idea what can and cannot be done. But just a quick look and even I saw right away that the approach to that set of tracks was both steep and short. a 40+ trailer with its wheels all the way in the back had at least a very high likelihood of getting high centered. Even a laymen like me knows he should have been going way faster over that crossing to get over it. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Should have turned around!, Many years ago a lowbed hauling a dozer did the high speed cross the tracks thing and moved the tracks out of gauge enough to derail the next train. cost that company huge $$$. Car haulers are very low to the tracks and lighter that a dozer and if he had sped up, there probably wouldnt have been any issues. but the new drivers lack the critical thinking skills, to analyze a problem before it gets to the critical stage and becomes a nightmare. I have seen some simple mistakes turn in to huge issues. I had a 14’ tall load and was going through Ft Worth Tx and saw a sign that said 13’6" bridge ahead… made a lot of people mad but got to the side of the raod ASAP, and called Highway Patrol, they helped me back up to exit and showed me how to get around the bridge and checked my route to make sure I could go that way. Legal height is 14’ so they didnt write any ticket and actually thanked me for not hitting their bridge

I’m not certain that even GPS will help those unfixed stupid people. Maybe they should be “fixed” to stop passing on their genes.

I’m sure than many of you are aware of the “The Can Opener or The Gregson Street Guillotine”. And, it’s railway related too!

there are truck specific GPS on the market, but I have not even bothered to look into one, but I do not think they have this type of ability in them. Its easy to find low bridge information to plug into a GPS, but steep grade crossings are not so easy to find, and I have not heard of a data base of them anywhere. this one looks like a very small road, not any type of highway, so less traveled, and less chance of people knowing any issues. It all points back to the driver knowing what his truck is capable of doing and not doing. I can’t count how many times I have had to figure a different way because of an unforseen issue like construction at a turn or things of that nature. All in a days work. Sometime it all goes right … not often, but sometimes

And here I thought more speed was the answer to EVERY problem.

Yet from all of the ‘Star Trek’ stuff, I just always assumed it was “MORE POWER”. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Isn’t that just semantics? More power=more speed? this truck drivers main problem is that he did not ask Scotty for more power and thus he was not able to achieve warp speed to get over the tracks.

The dilithium crystals are gonna blow!!!

dammit Jim I’m a doctor but MR Scott sounds concerned!

Captian , it’s logical that MR Scott knows about your unlogical and complete disregard for safety , when it all our asses on the line, not just the random red shirt that dies every episode!
