Car Barn Build

I’ve been wanting a car barn to store some cars in to make up a train easier, since I have to carry them from the shed. I got some building parts from Bruce, at Colorado Structures. He was very helpful in figuring it all out. You have to supply glazing/roof/lights/hinges yourself. I decided to add some redwood strips for re-inforcement since it gets pretty windy here.

It will hold 4 cars in it’s 70" length. Each panel is 10" wide.

In this front view you can see the door opening and the redwood strips I added. A flat metal DiBond signboard panel piece will be the roof, with a removable piece!

A detail of the side. The strips that cover the seams also hide the screw heads. Corner pieces will be added. Window frames with multi-panes, like industrial windows come with the panels. Once painted I will install them and put glazing behind them. This will go in the yard on the west side of my layout. It will have lights over each door and some inside.

That looks like a pretty versatile piece of plastic, one could make all kinds of things from it like different buildings, tunnel portals… or put a bunch together like you did to make a long shed. Will you use all the window openings or maybe blank some out? Will you do a flat roof or pitch it somehow. Opening doors? Interesting build, do keep us updated.

I like this project, Jerry. I have a clamp exactly like yours so I could make one too.

At first I thought your plan was to use this as a fancy carrier to bring cars from your shed, but I guess your idea is to keep the cars on the pike, but warm and dry.

I don’t worry too much about my own freightcars; not sure if I should; I just leave them out to weather, believe it or not. I’m lazy i guess!

I bring my locos and varnish indoors if it’s going to rain.

Those panels would make a really good main passenger depot for my city, I think… Thanks for posting!

Terrific looking project, Jerry! Keep us posted on your progress!

Yup, thats cool…

Thanks guys. Here’s a link to the building parts:

You can get doors for the portals, also other windows/roof pieces.

I plan a flat roof from Dibond sign board, which is aluminum with a poly core. It will sit in my rail yard over one track. We have really hard water here and it would leave deposits all over one side of my cars.

I finished up the car barn and got it installed. It has lights inside and over the door. Holds 4 cars out of the weather so I can make up a train easily, just have to haul over the engine. It was a fun project and didn’t cost all that much. Not too heavy, but has some weight to it. Two metal straps across the bottom with landscape spikes to hold it down good, just in case. Used that on my elevator and it has worked well. Side view.

Putting the cars inside.

Overall view of how it fits in the layout. Dummy Geep will stay parked by it.

Jerry, looks neat…

I like it and it blends in well with your layout.
Besides a barn to store cars in does it also double as a … service facility? or some type of factory or processing plant?
You might need to come up with a back story as to why the RR needs it.

Very, very cool, Jerry. I like the elevator too!
