Large Scale Central

Canadian Invasion 2006

Doug Matheson has been to Marty’s twice and our place twice. Only once on the same trip. This September, he is coming to Carlyle with 3 fellow Canadians and then they are all proceeding to Marty’s, with us.

Now, I realize this is sounding an awful lot like what Ken started in Ottawa. He went for a couple of years and then we came along and Bruce and Bob and Jon and Ed with Diane, then with Gaetan coming to the defence of Canada with Nicole from Montreal. And twice now we have visisted Mccurdy’s.

I’m just wondering what will happen? Now understand, all are welcome. That is, at least as far Carlyle.

An “Operating Session” is being planned for a Wednesday afternoon/evening, September 20th. We’ll start sometime in early afternoon.

Homeland Security contacted me, but I told them not to worry. This is basically the same group that ends up at Freddy’s. The said, “You mean the Friar?” I could only respond with a smile.

We are 50 miles east of St. Louis, Mo. in the cornfields of Illinois and 19 miles from 3 major Interstates. If you need directions or want more info, contact me at [email protected].

Hi…hello from Durango…The train trip to Silverton, Yesterday, was a good trip. It was a double header… Today, I had an opportunity to talk to Mr. Riley of B’mann…and photograph the new three truck Shay; the box czf, hopper and flat. I’ll post the pictures when I get home next week.
Ric; could you please let Gord Bellamy know that I picked up 5 LGB ore cars for the standard guage operation. Four are SF, with seperate numbers, and a single CN one.

talk again soon.

Well Ric, if I hadn’t already made plans to fly out to Oregon in Sept, I would definitly be making this trip. I have yet to see Marty’s layout in person and along with yours it’s on my “Must-Do” list. Oh well, …one of these days…

At least I won’t need a birth certificate or Passport…

I is home…after a drive of 3 days out and 4 days back, with over a week in Durango…I’m NOT GOING ANYWHERE…it was a total of 1830 KMs…

I did see the turnoff of interstate 70, for Ric’s place twice…once on the way out and again on the return…

Sorry, Ric; but I is too “Roaded Out”…I think I’ll stay home and apply couplers to the new rolling stock.

I just can’t believe I had you within 19 miles, twice, and couldn’t by you a beer and some bar-b-q. You know in Illinois we have drive up windows in all the liquor stores? But “single malt” usually has ice cream in it.

The day is here and the American and Canadian Flags are flying side by side. I got a call from the Doug last night and they had made it to Dayton, Ohio. Arrival is expected around noon Carlyle time. I guess it doesn’t matter if things are ready or not. Today is here. Pictures to be posted.

And 3 days until the Marty invasion…

See Y’all there!

I’m outa here in about 3 hours!!

Warren

Okay, its Thursday morning. We have survived one attack of the invasion, more may come today. All of us leave for Marty’s at O dark thirty tomorrow to continue this debacle. As I said on another thread people shouldn’t have this much fun. Here is an International crew discussing switching concerns in the area of Old State Light. Doug M. and Gordon B. are in deep conversation with Mac and Greg V. Check out that weather.

Train movement has pretty much ground to a halt at the bottleneck of “Consolidated”. The look of disgust or concern on Skip M’s face shows some of what is going on. That’s Todd S., Ralph D. and Paul N. working their trains through the wye.

The “dispatcher’s panel” was a lonely place in this midweek ops session. If you look close you can see the movement of the trains through out the world of the KVRwy.

Jan, the Yardmaster, kept the trains movin while juggling food and being an excellant hostess. I owe her big for this. Tomorrow is our 34th wedding anniversary. We are celebrating by driving to Marty’s with friends. As I’ve said, she married me the first year for love and as stayed with me all these years just trying to get even.

Greg V. and Doug M. head westbound at the end of their run. They are approaching “Pin Oak” and planning for the moves required to get the last of their work done and get their train put to bed at “Fiddle”.

I owe a lot, to a lot of people, for letting me have this much fun with my hobby. When you have a day like this, it makes all the work worthwhile. Wow!!!

SIGH!!<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

and I’m missin it…

Er , Ric ,
How big is this layout? Only I recognise a map of the London Tube in the bottom right hand corner .
Mike

Mike, Our lot is 85 feet wide and 175 feet deep. Trackage is somewhere in excess of 800 feet of mainline. If you look at this picture closely -

you can see the footprint of the house, outlined in black, in the middle of the dispatcher’s board. The yellow track lines represent the trackage in the basement. The other black boxes to the right of the picture, near Jan’s hand, with trackage in them represent Owl’s Bend, Southern Engine Terminal and Turntable and the J. Allen Industrial Park, all beneath the yellow trackage in the basement.

Ric ,
Thanks for the guided tour ,that surely must be one heck of a lot of fun to operate .It must bring in a lot of walking exercise too that size . So who says railroading ain’t good for your health ? Wealth may be hurt , but not health .
I am constantly impressed by the American layouts , I think that all of you try to capture the size of your country and do it pretty well .
By the way , when I first looked at the photo , I really did think for a moment that there was a map of London Underground on there . If you are not familiar with it , perhaps I can find one , or someone can rustle one up .
have fun ,
Mike

Mike,

Your welcome. We are exhausted, but have had fun. We are off to Marty Cozad’s in Nebraska City, Nebraska at O dark 30 in the am. Will report about the Canadians and all the fun they and we are having, when we get back.
