Large Scale Central

Can you identify this?

Guys,

I need help identifying who made this car. I got it without a box. I also put on the Link n pin coupler and sprayed it with primer. It used to be yellow. (I forgot what road name.) It comes with metal wheels and metal grab irons, steps, etc.

I recently gave it to a friend and he would like a few more.

Thanks,

jb

That’s the Bachmann so-called “1:20” 20’ box car. Bachmann wanted a line of short, freelance cars that measured 12" long (1:1 measurement). They called them 20’ long cars, thus at 12" long in 1:1, they became 1:20. In reality, these cars were simply drawn up on paper and produced. There is no prototype for this box car or any of the other cars in this series. Horribly confusing since around the same time they introduced the “real” 1:20.3 Shay, but what can you do?

BTW, if you replace the trucks with O gauge trucks, they make great 1:29 narrow gauge cars!

Kalamazoo/Hartland boxcars and almost identical in size. Yet Hartland is 1:24 scale. Theyall look great with the Bachmann industrial.

Thanks!
Do they still make them?
I can’t find them on the Bach site.

I don’t think they do, John, I have a couple of their shorty low side gons and a flatcar.

You may find a dealer on line that still has some, though.

John

Trainworld lists them for about $50.

They are on ebay frequently too

Scratch building would also be an option, if you want to invest the time and/or materials. I believe you can still purchase the trucks on B’mann’s site.

Except for industrial use, pretty useless for anything around these parts.
I had a big stack of them a couple of years ago, got 'em in a buy…gave them away when I could.
I have some low side gons in mining service still, one (used for parts) now has hook and loops body mounted with a Santa and Elves in it.
The stirrup steps on the ends are very, very fragile.
As are the lower door guides.
I see you have removed the other weak spot…the drop coupler mount.
That’s where they snap.

Trainworld lists two, currently.
95327 and 95368. Brown Ely Thomas and Yaller PRR boxcars.

95724, 95728, 95747, 20’ low side gons also listed.

No flats…but…pull the gon body off and you have a flat. Just pulls out.
Also, the ends come out of the gons for pipe cars.
