Can anyone identify this type of car?

this is the only picture of D&H 1000, was wondering if any of you know who made it? It’s on the list of things to bash this winter.

The best engine for their specifications was built by Wolseley of Great Britain. The Delaware & Hudson lent GE a Barney & Smith combine for experimenting. An ALCO motor truck was added on the front. Two 75 h.p. traction motors and a 600-volt generator were added. Once the huge engine was added, the baggage compartment was filled and the car weighed 68 tons. A trial run from Schenectady to Saratoga showed D&H 1000 (sometimes referred to as GE No. 1) could go 40 mph.

Car #2000 is the next doodlebug from GE
“The designers decided their next car needed: light weight, greater power, single end control, and a more dependable engine. The engine was the most difficult to accomplish. In 1906, a Gas Engine Department was formed. A new V8 was developed that required an explosive charge to start. It weighed 3,900 pounds as opposed to the 7-ton Wolseley. GE No. 2 was an all-steel from Wason Mfg. Co. of Springfield, MA. The final weight was less than half that of car no. 1. This car trialed on the Lehigh Valley; Chicago Great Western; Dan Patch Lines; and the D&H. It was extensively damaged by hitting a locomotive on the Rapid City, Black Hills & Western. Car 2 was later sold to the Dan Patch Lines where it was destroyed in a 1914 fire.”

Garden Railways magazine has had a couple of articles on kitbashing them.

GR 12/01 and 06/10.

I will probably build one someday. I like the set and forget trains to run when I just want to watch.

great info Richard, Now that I know it was a combine unit i can get a length dimension that should be accurate.

I wasn’t sure it doodlebug was brand specific in the name or type

I’d make joke about Aristo making these versions of doodlebugs but i wont go there :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks

#1000 looks like a Hall-Scott.

For what ever reason the right hand side of the photo of #2000 is cut off, but I reckon that car #2000 is a McKeen Car, I don’t think that is a GE product, but I could be wrong.

Further research has proved me wrong, it looks like it is GE product as in this link (http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/dh2000.jpg)

The car has similarities with a McKeen but of course it doesn’t have the port hole windows, I wonder if it was rebuilt by GE?

The reason that the photo is cut off is that it exceeds the software limits of 800 pixels wide. If you run Firefox as your browser, you can right click on the photo and select ‘View image’ and it will appear in it’s entirety.
