Camping Trailers (Moved from TrainOps 2024)

We had a generator in our Class C and it was handy (mostly for keeping the fridge on while driving) and we’ll probably end up getting a portable unit to stick in the truck bed and plug the trailer into.

Everyone advised against getting the on-board propane-powered one, since they suck up a TON of propane, apparently.

My guess is I’ve added maybe 150#?

The two lead-acid batteries weight 52# a piece, and I’m replacing them with two 87# batteries, which have a TON more capacity (64ah vs 800ah of draw). Then I’m adding the converter/chargers, which weigh about 45# a piece. Plus assorted odd and sods.

They are definitely less efficient on propane and the maximum power is also reduced. I don’t want to carry gasoline, so for occasional use, propane was my choice. Running full bore with AC on would probably drain a 20# tank in less than a day.

@Hines The generator added 115. The carrier about 20 and the propane about 50. Our mattress upgrade added 100 and the solar controller about 10. My battery exchange was a wash. So about 300 pounds in added accessories.

Excess train supplys?
Is that like left over bacon?

Wrestled the batteries into place and have them wired into the existing wiring. Once the inverter/chargers are part of the mix the wiring will change.

what is that wheel disk for?
low tec fireplace?

In Canada eh ,they use old washing machine drums for fire pits .

Yea. Most campgrounds around here use one split-rim truck rims for fire pit rings.

Really nice looking camp. I suppose this is the big shake-down cruise for all the new gear? Hope all works wonderfully. Have a blast!

Looks nice and comfy, trees don’t hinder solar, or am I thinking someone else has it on a trailer? Are you far away from civilization?

I’m betting there is a walking path to a Dollar Store just beyond the trees.

Unfair bet. Almost anyone in this country is less than a half hour walk to a Dollar General store these days.

No, that’s a campground we’ve gone to several times. Needed a known quantity close by for the shakedown run. Its only a couple miles from lots of civilization

Some more work today. Got the 3/4 plywood backing for the two MultiPlus Inverter/Chargers mounted, and laid out where the bus bars and 120v splitters will go. The MultiPlus will hang from those brackets, and also get screwed into the wall. The batteries are off to the left of the photo. There is room horizontally for one more, and I could rack another three on top of them if I need MOAR POWER.

Lots done today. Got the MultiPluses (er, MultiPli?) mounted on the wall. They’re not particularly heavy but the weight is all at the top, so they’re awkward to haul around.

Anyway, those are in place, and measured for the 12v cable to go to the bus bars. The rest of the 12v wiring, with the exception of two of the solar controllers, is in place.

Next is working on the 120v side. 6/4 wire. Tough to work with. Yay.

Remember it’s amperage that kills and that 6/4 can carry plenty of it! Voltage usually just makes you soil yourself (sometimes heavily) then curse like a drunken sailor.

Yup. And on the 12v side, there’s the possibility of drawing 250a from each battery. Which is why those cables are 4/0!

Just before we moved I bought a Preditor 5000 dual fuel and set it up on a rear carrier with a 30# propane bottle. Today I’m using it for it’s intended purpose for the first time.

I have been running on battery only since 10AM Friday.

At the new house there is only one 15A outdoor outlet. My shore power extension cord needs a 20A outlet and I want it to be a GFCI. Walmart only had 15A GFCI’s so, for tonight, I’m using the generator to power my battery charger.

Tomorrow I’ll check the local hardware store to see if they have a 20A GFCI so I can run shore power.

We are still sleeping in the camper. Most of our stuff went into storage when our close was delayed and the movers could not wait. That would be fine except our AC fried last Wednesday. The fan has been doing OK with lows in the 60’s, but now we are in a heat wave.
