C.V.S.Ry. M-11 in the electric shop

I think the cab would look better where you have the two hoods

This the new Cab Forward design.

Er …Jon! I certainly don’t want to appear critical but…uh…er…how long has it been since you’ve gotten new glasses? Seriously though the parts look really great. Now if you can just get 'em all together. That is going to be a swell looking lokie!

Isn’t that the “post-wreck” version?

Later,

K

Nice work Jon, am glad to see that it’s finished… 11 certainly looks a little bit different from 10…

Is that the “exploded” view?..

Does anyone know the voltage rating of the cab light on a Bachman 45 Ton diesel? I’m finally ready to start soldering wires. I’m pretty sure I should add a current limiting resistor on the cab light as well as the LED headlights. Tough to do without an idea of the operating voltage. In case you missed it, I cut out all of the built-in electronics and smoke generators.

Basic wiring is complete and a functional test was run on both battery and track power…

I was quite surprised that my track power worked just fine with no maintenance. This is the first time in probably 4 years that a train ran outdoors on track power. The Track Power / Battery Power switch was located on the fuel tank. I “painted” the chrome handle and hardware with a black sharpie…

Switch handle down toward the track is track power, up toward the cab is battery power. Both sources are fully isolated by the DPDT switch…

The black weight on the deck is part of the weight I removed from my Porter to make room for batteries. Since I’ve gained some room with the removal of the circuit boards I’m planning on adding some weight for improved traction.

Next is connecting the head lamps and cab light; wiring up the speaker and putting the cab and hoods back on.

Jon??? nice… now, if you turn the fuel tank over, and add a plow under it, you’ve got a ““Flanger””…

Nice work Jon. So what’s the voltage of the headlight

The headlight is an LED. I’ll guess at the forward voltage and add a resistor. It’s the cab light that I’m worried about.

A tiny bit of progress today. Made up an M/U cable. The yellow ends signify that this is a straight-through cable, only for use when running Elephant style with M-10…

I love heat shrink tubing

This project is proving to be more difficult than it should be. With the warmer weather it was shelved for a few weeks, but it’s been cool lately so I decided to get back at it. Searching out what others had done with this loco I found a conversion Tony posted in 2007. I liked his idea to use plugs on all the lighting wires to make dis-assembly easier. That was good for one evenings worth of work.

Last night I tied in all the lights and ran some more tests which pointed out a fatal flaw in my wiring of the lights. Not only did the wrong end light up, but when I tested on track power I realized I had tied the lights into the battery train line, not the motor line. Easy to fix, but kills an evenings work :frowning:

I really want to get this wrapped up and out of the shop. I’m anxious to hear how the front facing hood mounted speaker sounds with the big speaker in the trail car behind.

It seemed to take for ever, but it’s finally done. M-11 made it’s first run over the railroad today in it’s new configuration. Here’s a summary of the work performed… All factory electronics & wiring completely gutted. Speaker & baffle added to front hood. Train-Line installed to allow use with my HEP car (battery R/C trail car). Power source selection added - track or HEP. White LED headlamps replaced with brighter yellow/orange LED’s. 2 additional pounds of weight added in rear hood. Couplers replaced with Accucraft knuckles. Here’s one of the “rejects” from the group of roster shots taken for Facebook today…

And while the train was out on the line, Flat Stanley paid a visit…

I still need to work on coupler height. In the low position I can’t couple with any of my cars; only M-10. Last time I tried the high position it didn’t work out, but I’m going to mess with it again. BTW, the trucks were completely changed over to hard-wiring when I first put the 45 tonner in-service 5 or 6 years ago.

Jon, engine came out great… nice addition…

Thanks. If it ever gets torn down again I think I will paint the deck and frame black to match M-10. I’m really likin’ that Yellow/Orange LED. They were salvaged from a surplus buy from All Electronics - 9 of them in a head with wire & connectors for $2. Was a pain to disassemble but worth the effort.

EDIT to add details of LEDs:

Came from one of these…

All Electronics still has them at http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/LED-155/12-LED-AMBER-LAMP-USED/1.html

They are potted to the circuit board with an epoxy that will come off with judicious use of heat.

Jon, I’m aware of flat Stanley however I’m not so sure what he is doing in that shot?? Nice MU cables !
