Bye Bye Vista

Heard today that Microsnot has decided to finally pull the plug on that bit of excrement in favor of something called “Windows 7”…

My question is whether it is because they finally got their heads out of their collective posteriors and admitted it is a lousy OS, or if they figure that they can con/force even MORE people into buying the NEXT one?

There is nothing wrong with Vista. Driver and software compatibility issues are going to be common to any new OS. The biggest problem with Vista was the real lack of any improvement over XP other than eye candy.
When you have a monopoly, there is no incentive for innovation.

“Bye Bye” my foot, it’s “Hasta la Vista”; never judge the present “latest and greatest” until you have seen and tried the “improved version”.

I doubt if this is a re-write. Just a re-package and a new name. XP and 2000 weren’t new, just updates to the NT platform. I think Vista was a ground-up re-write. It has failed miserably at being accepted by fortune 500 IT departments and smaller businesses who watch the trends. Evidence the emergence of XP Downgrades from major retailers like Dell.

Ralph, your the first person I’ve ever heard say there is nothing wrong with Vista. Perhaps you’re smart enough to turn off all the annoying protections and messaging services and tweak it to the point of usability. I might be, but refuse to invest the time and effort. XP works fine for me and the business I support.

I was a beta tester for Vista. It ran fine on an older Dell work station. I prefer XP simply because I know it works with the software and peripherals I use.
Vista really isn’t “new” technology either. They had scrapped the idea to use a new file system and Vista still uses NTFS. Vista is more secure, but that creates some of the annoyances you mentioned.

Thanks for the correction Ralph. I really thought Vista was a ground up re-write, but I have nothing to back that up, so I’ll concede to your more intimate knowledge  So we really agree, Vista doesn’t offer any real improvement and adds annoyances. So why bother.

I decided early on that replacing XP with Vista just wasn't worth spending the money. Likewise, if I bought a laptop with Vista and they didn't offer the free XP downgrade, I wouldn't spend the money to install XP. Ralph

Well, that’s the nice part about a having Dell OEM XP CD. It will install on any Dell processor without the need for a key and pass the Genuine Windows tests at Microsoft.Com - Just don’t tell Bill Gates.
