Bulk Head cars

In between tweaking the blower car I built 2 bulkhead cars. I found the aristocraft modern flat cars on a auction site and couldn’t pas them up. I already have to many flats but no bulkhead ones so I thought I would convert these. I’m very happy with the way they turned out and as you can see it was pretty simple to do. I plan on building removable center beams for these cars as well. The bulkheads are built using masonite and wood glue.
I went back and forth between painting them brown, black or red. The RR’s colours are primarily red so red it was.
Here comes the GP38 with the new bulkhead cars in tow.

Here is a close up. As you can see a very simple design. The ladder rungs are made from drop ceiling wire.

Nice work Todd… But they won’t work for “MIKs build Challenge 2014”. You will have to keep the thinking cap on for that.

Those are great Todd!

Are you planning to be hauling pulpwood…or finished lumber? both?

Great looking cars Todd. A friend suggested I make a damaged stock car into a pulp car. You certainly have given me something to think about.

I have had the damaged car since mid June - awaiting a decision by USPS about its replacement and the damaged cars fate - so I guess I have more time to think about the project. lol

Thanks guys. I’m not sure of a load yet but they did come with 2 custom built piles of lumber each.
I do like the look of a pulp wood load but might just go with lumber. Building a light weight pulp load would be a chore I think.
The bulkheads are removable via 2 screws so they are easy to swap back to flats.

That is a sharp looking car and load Boomer. Nice details and weathering.

Of course Dave, this is still 2013 and Miks build challenge isn’t untill next year. I don’t even know the challenge yet. I always have my thinking cap on.

Nice looking builds there Todd. I like the “KISS” method, plus you have just given me some ideas for some flats of mine.

Hey Boomer did you scratch build that flatcar? It looks great.

Chuck

Nice work Todd!

Wow I like that idea, got a lot of those, great idea for them, got my thinking cap on for now what I am going to do with mine.

Thanks for sharing a great idea!

Those look good.
I have my thinking cap on for the Challenge but smoke keeps coming out of my ears!
i just ate a McRib, maybe that will bring something to mind.

Nice work!

These came out nice looking Todd, and they go well with the GP-38.
