Building the Kittatinny Mt RR

Thanks again guys.

Vincent I had thought about the covered bridge blocking the view but then I liked the idea of it being a suprise. I want people to walk around and find things. Being only a foot or so off the ground should not block the falls too much since people will be looking well above the bridge. Plus I think seeing the train come out of the covered bridge with the water fall in the back gound make might a good scene. At least I hope lol… Hopefully tomorrow I can get the waterfall finished and see if lowes has there plants out yet.

Looks great Shawn. You going to be building buildings this weekend?

As long as it’s not one of your son’s favorite trains! (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)But seriously it’s really starting to shape up nice. Congrats on running your first train! I’m really jealous of your fast pace on this.

Hi Shawn

I quite like the way you are implementing the layout.

I tried to prepare a preview of the covered bridge you are proposing to install over the water feature.

I wonder if there is a risk of the bridge blocking too much the view of the waterfall.

I agree that a covered bridge blocks too much of the waterfall. Wouldn’t a truss bridge be better?

The bridge only blocks seeing the waterfall from this one angle. I think the bridge looks very nice and should stay.

I agree, Bill, that it only blocks the view from this angle, but given the layout of his layout (the Department of Redundancy Department has struck, again (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)), this will be the most common viewing angle.

I’d recommend moving the track towards the camera, and then using some sort of a deck bridge.

My back hurts just looking at this RR…but I like it!!(http://oi62.tinypic.com/2uho4lz.jpg)

The Cumberland trestle bents are redwood

Thanks again guys. Big decisions. Ill have to make a mock up covered bridge and see how it looks. Im hopping to get the waterfall built today. I don’t think the covered bridge will block things too much. If the garden was elevated to waist height then yes. The picture I took was done at a lower angle. You still can view the falls from on the deck and as you walk down the walkway to the bridge. It adds that surprise. I already have trestles planned for the section by the well head.

I enjoy a nice covers bridge and highly recommend them.

The line looks great Shawn! Lots of fun!

Shawn,

Looking good, you got a lot of work done in a short period. Can’t wait to see it!

Kevin

I made more progress in the last few days although not as much as I wanted. Had to work on the layout in between doing yard work. Friday O finished building the pondless waterfall. It needs a little tweaking and some overhanging plants in spots but overall im pretty happy with it. It does loose some water from the splashing but its not a big deal since it will only run what im out in the yard or running trains. The trestles are temporary. I decided that the covered bridge will go over the gap.

I also bought 13 spruce trees to get my pine forest started. I also got some boxwoods, Creeping Phlox, Alysum and some sedums. I haven’t planted most of the plants yet. Im still debating on whether or not I want to put a small mountain or two in the layout. Once I decide on this Ill have a better idea on where I want my plants.

Today’s project was getting the two switches leading into the reverse loops to spring back. I had the Aristo manual switches but learned fast they really suck for outside use if you want the switches to spring back. I cleaned them out good and laid some block under the switches hopping that would help. I thought wrong. My next step was to go the route that Jon and someone else mentioned (in my post in general discussions). After looking at the switches I came up with a supper simple solution using some springs I had laying around.

I need to find a looser spring. These are a bit stiff. My 4 wheeled cars don’t have enough weight to open the switch. This is a temporary fix for now. Eventually I want to find a better way, using a switch stand, a tenmile switch throw or even an LGB manual switch, since it doesn’t stick up as high as the Aristo.

Some landscaping

That is looking great Shawn, Love the water fall thingy. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Strange the Aristo machines won’t work for you. I’ve had mine outside for years and they still work great. Once in a while I need to clean ballast from the points and throw-bar, but when there is nothing jamming the switch they just work. All of my cars are pretty heavy though.

Progress is looking good.

Im not sure why they wont work Jon. I like the ideas given to me in general discussions. I like the idea using the tenmile throws placed above or Johns with the V wire. As soon as my throws come in Ill play around with it more.

I also got a chance to run some live steam (no pictures sorry) I first ran my Forny, the most sensitve on grades. I did learn that the track is not perfectly level (big suprise lol…) when running it. The grades that are their, do not seem bad. The forny was able to make it with two passanger cars. I then ran my Cricket and it had no problems with the grades. Overall I was happy with the track. I might tweak it in a few spots to lessen the slight grades. Hopefully todays rains will help pack settle everything down nice and I can see what washes out.

The layout looks so nakes still. More like a desert landscape lol…

Shawn, layout is looking great… But, what’s taking so long to get the covered bridge done???

Shawn, I wouldn’t advise holding your breath… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
