Large Scale Central

Building Flats

I’ll have a wall that will run the entire length of my GRR (as shown below in green)

I plan to build some flats to create an old small town with a loading dock, Saloon/Hotel and station (near the center of the walled area.

to the far right I will create a tunnel opening that will allow the train(s) to be stored inside the building on the concrete floor-a mini switching yard if you will.

towards the far left at or near the tree I’d like to maybe do a flat of a lumber mill, or something rustic like an old cabin or bunkhouse.

I hope to use mini-trees and minor curves to create the space needed to separate the areas and give it the needed depth.

I’ve searched in vain to find any outdoor flats (or many indoors for that matter). I stumbled over an older thread feat. the Port Orford Coast RR but all the pics were missing and the MLS PDF’s were a no-go too?

any ideas? Inspiration?

Thanks

Cale,

Here’s one I made for Doug Matheson - it’s the Rosseau Hotel.

Or, at least the back of it.

In place at the Invasion - next to one he built from Jigstones

Also, if you have access to Model Railroader, there’s a few articles: July 1980, and May 2002.

Cale - If your BellSouth email is still good I’ve sent Richard’s PDF file to you. I thought It was posted here on LSC somewhere too but I can’t locate it.

EDIT to add I just breezed though the PDF and most of Richard’s buildings are full 3D structures. I remember he made a few flats on the latest extension but I don’t think they are in the PDF.

EDIT 2 - The email bounced. PM me your current address if you would like the PDF.

OK - It’s a file size thing. I went to upload it and found it already exists in my webspace. I don’t know why I missed it the first time around. This was originally posted with permission from Richard Smith and the person who compile the PDF for Richard (sorry I can’t recall that name).

File is here: http://lsc.cvsry.com/POC_Elevated_Benchwork.pdf

Looks about the right size for a full size flat of the Thurmond station

This one has been on my build list for a while. Make a great backdrop for my yard at Franklin Falls…

I got pretty good at converting a single Piko cheepie building kit into 3 building flats, the front and rear panels used independently then taking the sides and gluing them together to create a two story facade building flats, or just add a base to raise the single panel to create a new unique facade.

I guess it depends on what your looking to accomplish. Seems most building flats that I have seen have been custom built. There was a company offering flats made from cardboard but I doubt that is what you have in mind. I have done several 3 dimensional flats (if that makes sense) they range from 1 to 12 inches deep but are not complete structures.

I’ll attach a couple pictures if I can find them.

The latest one was the dairy/feed lot

The early flats along the train shed wall.

There are some others but I can’t find them right now.

Rick

There’s a company, originallly from Florida, but now in Casa Grande, AZ, which makes flats. I think they are designed for interior use, but they are so well built and painted that they survived a couple of summers here in Sacramento.

The company is called VESCO, as I recall. Nice stuff. I bought a bakery front, added a building behind it. After a couple of years, the back (which I built) fell off. Then the lettering fell off, but the front is still around. Maybe this winter, I’ll cut new letters for it and put in out next Spring/Summer.

Yea, Dick, that’s the link I posted above Ricks post.
