Large Scale Central

Building and Bashing Amtrak Equipment

In my quest for info I ran across a great page explaining some differences in the F40PH’s Amtrak order over the years.

http://rapidotrains.com/f40ph-master-class/

It helped me learn why I was seeing such differences on the web from pictures posted.

If I did the math correctly, the LGB cars should be just over 35" long and about 5 1/4" high in 1/29 scale. I need to go outside and measure mine. In 1/32 scale that would be 4 3/4" high and 31 7/8" long. I’ll see just to what scale they are close to.

I got the Model RR mag from April 1987 just in with pics and drawings of the F40PH. I was also helped on another forum for the older drawings in Mainline modeler mag.

So I went to work on my air tanks trying to achieve the desired look. Seems I can’t remember how to solder copper pipes and burned all the flux right out of there. Urrggg. I’m getting old. Nothing new to show for all my work.

Don’t solder it …CA it

Would like to see the Mainline Modeler drawings. Never seen them before.

I’m working on the NWSL trucks. One set does not have the wipers or any way to pick up power? So I contacted NWSL and the tech said I could buy the parts. When they arrived, all I got was the carbon brushes. I tried to contact them again and did not get any reply?
So a member of another forum helped me out and sent me some springs for them. http://www.gscaletrainforum.com/
I have to configure the wires so they don’t rub on anything. The wheel spacing seems too tight? I’ll have to adjust them if there’s trouble. I would like to add wipers to the trucks also. I believe that will help them outside. I should have used the MTH trucks on this.

I just bought a copy of Model RR mag April 1987 that covered the F40PH as well.

If anyone buys some NWSL trucks, please check inside and make sure there’s grease. One of my trucks is dry. It maybe that way because of the person I bought it from was working in there. I heard from Jerry that his did not last long. I feel that there must be grease in there because of the plastic axle gears driven by the metal worm.

Rooster! Rooster! Hey Boss!!! She’s alive!

Well, just a quick test to for fun.

Thanks Boss!

I added much more weight so that she will do her share. Usually I put some inside the fuel tank with the speaker. This tanks pretty full with just the speaker so I put that piece where the batteries would be. I bet she weighs around 6 pounds now.

I’m filling in the shell now. I’d like to get it roughed in and maybe to the first paint soon.

Ooops, forgot about the battery box.

I almost forgot about this. I have been working on other stuff.
Baby steps anyways…

( it would be easy to make these into cabbage units. You wouldn’t need the fan, or vents, and the joint to lengthen the body would be right there. Just add some garage doors! )

Looks good to me Joe! If you wanna get anal you should reverse the exhaust stack .

Enjoying the progress pics !

I think I read something you posted about that many pages back? What’s about the exhaust? it’s supposed to be closer to the front right?

What is the thing in between the cooling roof fans and the brake fan that sticks up like another exhaust?

I’m struggling right now to create perfect rectangular holes for the ditch light’s housings to go into.

What’cha working on nowadays?

I had left this aside as the one truck’s worm gear had fallen off and I thought it was something much worse. It’s tough to pour work into something that doesn’t hold up. Many other things happened too and took my attention away. My O scale was shorting out from a couple issues there.

I also got a beat up Amtrak dash 8 that had a truck ripped off and missing. That got priority attention cause it was new. Seems the fleet is slowly growing anyways.

Model railroading is probably the only place where you can suffer fallen worms.

Draw out the square cutouts on the nose. Drill a hole dead center in that cut out with the largest bit that will keep it with in the lines (1/4" maybe?). Then all you have to do is go back and either cut out the cove in the four corners or file it down.

Yeap! Worked pretty good. I luckily had a small jewelers square file that helped. I was using a flat one at first and kept going off track.

Now I’m making mounts so that the ditch lights point the right angle. The shell is tipped in 2 directions right there that forced me t make a compound plate to square up the ditch lights.

So I’m filing my fingers trying to make tiny angle shim mounts!
